    Exactly.

Of note is that at least some of the EA games being released are using a wrapper in able to run under OS X. Haven't read any news as whether it's an interim transition step or long-term. ID though, it appears, is going the native code route.

id *always* goes the native code route.

The question is going to be though... which API set is he supporting this time? there was some very heavy indications he was digging into DirectX for the 360, and even looking into supporting it on Windows...

obviously he is still supporting an OpenGL route though... and I'm not sure about if the PS3 even supports OpenGL or not... i believe it does...

      but... yes... interesting...

the tech4 engine (doom3) is one of the smoothest running engines out there, if not THE most, and it looks great even at lowish resolutions.

Dunno if thats due to the OpenGL factor or the Carmack factor.

Carmack factor. Well, that and it was designed from ground up to run on GeForce 3 level hardware.

Even though it supports pretty much all the features that even modern engines are just getting around to implementing, it did not have the buzzword bingo portion of it down as good as Epic did with the Unreal engine or Valve with the Steam engine. Ie, while it supported physics (that were actually fully integrated into the engine), it did not support "Havok Physics"... because that was *such* a huge feature... and while it supported Pixel/Vertex Shader 2.0 code, it did not support "DirectX 9".

          ahh well...

Just realised there is one more fun thing about Safari beeing available on Windows...

There's official version of its engine for Windows for 3rd parties to use (check download section on webkit.org ). So perhaps projects like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swift_(web_browser) will become more viable... (too bad in case of Swift there's also Net framework beeing used)

PS. Also I've read somewhere idea how Apple can make Safari quite popular on Windows...by adding it to iTunes install of iPod users (yeah, I know, evil )

BTW, did somebody actually try to run Doom 3 on Gf3 here? (OTOH it has better OpenGL drivers than my Radeon 8500...but still )

When will there be a mac ultraportable? i.e. 12.1 screen 8 hr battery life. Kinda like the Thinkpad x61.

              MacBook Pro Mini.

Intels processors are not what's keeping them from doing it. Others are offering subnotebooks and tablets smaller than 12".

No reason to create a new thread, so here's a press release from Apple on some updated specifications for the iPhone:

Apple Newsroom is the source for news about Apple. Read press releases, get updates, watch video and download images.

If you can get past the marketing angle, there's a nice comparison chart. Obviously it's biased and only shows a specific set of specs, but the upgrades are definitely nice for anyone with the cash to throw-away on one.

lol. Good move going to "optical quality glass", although thats gonna drive the manufacture price up quite a bit...

anyways... onto the battery life thing.. thats why I like my Cingular 2125 / HTC Faraday. It and the 3125 / HTC StarTrek both offer 8 hour battery life and a screen that beats anything except the QWERTY SmartPhones

not the best phone by far, but it works better than just about any other i've used in the last few years...

of course, my biggest gripe with Apple has always been that their battery life is rather... overstated... especially on their iPod device... what they never mention is that it's an absolute maximum that is based on an optimized test whose results are almost impossible to duplicate in real life...

Definitely agree with you DGhost. I'm not impressed with the iPhone as a whole, but I find the implementation of various features quite interesting. I can't comment directly on the iPods as all I own is a first generation shuffle and it gets awesome battery life.

I like simplicity, so I have no use for a full iPod or an iPhone.

@schmo: As a consumer I like a lot of the products Apple makes. As a geek I often find them lacking. The only Apple products I actually own are an iBook and a iPod shuffle. There are other members here who own far more Apple stuff than I. In the end, I simply find that Apple does interesting work and just like every other member here, I post about things that interest me. Not sure how that's any worse than the crap that pollutes that religious and political threads. But I digress... love live the fanboy!
