Outlook odd behaviour

I have realised that I can simply plug my laptop into an ethernet port at work and access the intra/internet without any authentication!

I experiencing odd behaviour when trying to retrieve mail though Outlook. I have been told that only port 80 is open, however when Outlook tries to pull mail through IMAP it does eventually work! After a few minutes of sitting there greyed out, it will retrieve the headers and eventually the mail. I am very suprised by this, but obviously keen to speed it up. any thoughts? I can download files at 1Mb/s....

hmm... it seems that the server is timing out. Since I've started i've managed to pull three headers and one body, although that just contained a few lines of text. I can move emails to folders, purge etc within a second, I just can't seem to pull anything ... odd.

assuming your software settings are right?...is that port mapped through a managed switch?

dunno. It's at work where I have no access. I am sure it is, but I can't understand why IF it works, why it is so slow...

you can test first if the port is accessible
telnet MailHost 143

succeed or fail, its worth finding out first

if you ping those individuale ips'...is there a large difference between hop 1 and hop 2? sounds like your packets are expiring in route...depending on network load.

I can ping the individual IPs with a response time of 1-2ms.

like you said...odd...isn't that a secure session though? maybe it is the way that port is patched through the network, IT could check?

I've tried connecting via POP3. I connect to the server straight away but it downloads mail in bytes/s. I'll discuss with IT now...

Got a different bloke who catagorically stated that I'm not allowed to connect personal equipment to their network.
I'll pretend that i didn't phone....

The local IT guy said it was ok. Well, he said that 'connect any laptop to a live port and set it to DHCP'. I don't need any authentication and I have full intra/internet access
