http://lifehacker.com/355580/mimic-v...-feature-in-xp - main thread with Autohotkey script/script"compiled" into Better Rename.exe trayapp. But it works only when renaming files using F2.
However in comments...
http://pitaschio.ara3.net/ - small trayapp with this feature exactly how it works in Vista. Plus few other neat bonuses, check 'em out. So far seems to be light enough/coded properly enough (activelly developed since 2001)
http://qttabbar.wikidot.com/ I might also check this one, among bonuses (well, ok, main feature really) it has tabs in explorer windows (I think window managers generally should be tabbed...). Other stuff on this webpage also seems interesting enough to check (Vista style adress bar in XP). But all those apps require .Net 2.0, which I don't have on this machine (and no way to get it really - mobile access)
PS. So...it seems I'm definatelly choosing slowest/cheapest Thinkpad R61 with XP Pro . Right now Vista oficially has no features that I need/want...but bloat is for sure one of the things I do not wish to have... (ok, there is one dillema left: will Intel keep X3100 gfx drivers on par performance/etc. wise with the ones for Vista?...)
