err..if you have 196mbyte why not just disable the swap space?.

also how much HDD space do you have left?
if you have let windows manage your swap space, and you don't run defrag often you HDD will be fragged to shit which can totally freak windows swap managemnet(can't assign large enough continuous block to swap out to for some apps)

resources , includes things like free registry space and HDD space as well as free mem.

interesting enough my home computer(win98se) with 64m and 128mb swap space starts at about %89 free, whereas my work computer with 128mb of mem and 128 swap space has %82 free(95sr2).
(with nothing open)

things to do: assign a ****ing huge vcache(max an min the same)But keep below 1/4 of available mem.
Swap should be as small as you require(same max and min) don't go below 64mb(just disable), 128mb is a nice size.

another cool way to use extra mem is to set up a ramdrive(NOT the MS one). set to start from the top of memory, and point your TMP TEMP enviro variables to it(very fast temp directory). With most new mobo's the cacheable area of memory space is well above 64 mbytes but for mobo that has more memory than its cachable limit, a large ramdrive or HDD cache at the TOP of memory can be used to force win 98/95 to reside in the lower cacheable area.

Marshmallowman - I have 4.47 gigs on my main drive and 10.6 gigs on my secondary drive. Enough space for a LARGE swap file???? I'll worry about memory management later cause it's really fine. It just goes down to 48% fast, but it stays there until I open about 35 more programs...

Ok, someone tell me why I can no longer check my email??? Outlook opens fine and all my protocals and settings are fine, but whenever I try and get my email, I get an error that says my server isn't there. This is after I ran all the cleanup files mj12 suggested in his second post. I NEED this back so someone please tell me how and the sooner the better. Thanks

to set a permant swap space
(non sizeing swap space).

1. disable virtual memory.
2. reboot.
3. defrag your swap drive.
4. set your new (nonsizable swap space)
5. reboot

that way your swap space is always in one continuous block(much better speed).

Question: What are Windows resources? Does it have anything to do with the amount of RAM and the swap file? I don't think so, simply because of the way Microsoft defines this term.

When they get filled up--usually when you run a lot of programs at once or keep your computer on for days at a time--Windows becomes unstable. Although all steps suggest regarding the swap file are good, I don't think they'll have any effect on your system resource usage, as this term is defined and reported by Windows 98.

Muad'Dib, if your email software is telling you it can't find the server, you need to start there. Check the email software configuration, particularly the part about the server and it's location on the network.
If there's another machine on the network that accesses the same email database (and you can get access to this machine), check it's email software configuration and compare it to yours. I think that's where you need to start.

That's the problem, all my settings are correct. I have the correct server name, the correct address, ... My server is a POP3 server and I can't even telnet into it (although I can check it through the internet), so I'm thinking that for some reason, I'm just being denied access to POP servers. I don't really understand if that makes any sense, so if it does tell me how to fix it... I was thinking if I reinstall my NIC that might help? Any ideas?

PS: I know here in OZ there has been a rash of nasty email virus's. So A lot of companys/ISP's and even government depts have been shutting down there email servers?.

How do I ping the server? I know the server is running because I can access it from another computer, just not mine... ?

try and reinstall outlook. you may have deleted a registry setting by my mistake.

another thing you could try is deleteing (eraseing your unsername and password and reenter it. i once had a case of not being abble to log into my internnet account. tech support had me doing every thing extracting files and chaneing network settings. then out of the blue he tells me to reenter my password and username (even though it looked fine on the screen (the username that is) as soon as that was done i was able to log on. some how the information got messed up.even though it looked fine)

I'll try reinstalling Outlook then. I've already tried reentering my password/username and it did't help. Thanks. I'll give it a try as soon as a copy of outlooks comes into my hands...

pinging your mail server will allow you to find out if you can reach your mail server. eg server is up, address is right etc.

go to the dospropmt and type

ping mail.yourserver.com

or maybe something like

ping 100.101.102.104

those numbers are bogus, you should use the ip address or ip numbers that you have entered in your mail server settings(check incomming and outgoing)

if you ping and get a response eg 4 replies etc then your address/ip numbers are correct and it is Definitely a software,user or password problem.

if you get no response then the address/ip is wrong, or perhaps your network settings are wrong.
