  • thunderbird plugin or alternative?

    Hello!

I am looking for a (simple) software tool for my dad. Is there a plugin for Thunderbird that automatically resizes jpgs one attatches to outgoing mails?

If not, what is the easiest workflow for a computer novice to achieve this?

    Thanks!

Picasa has this, though I'm not sure if you can use any other e-mail provider than Gmail (can't really check now - no Picasa here and I have acces through mobile atm). And generally it's rather nice piece of software (btw, uploading photos to picasaweb is also easily done)

The is a plugin called "Image Zoom" that lets you scale images. You can select either the presets (100, 125, 150, 200 or 400), zoom in, zoom out, image fit or a dialog that lets you set a custom zoom factor.

        TBird addons page: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/139

Follow the directions on the page.

        Image Zoom also works in other Mozilla programs like FireFox (shown). More on the home page;

UtwigMU: hey, that could indeed be a simple tool! I'll give it a go.

Dr Mordid: I have imagezoom installed, but it is for viewing (I think... ). I ment a plugin that might rescale images when sending mails.

A currently experimental plugin is on mozilla.com, it is called "jpeg resizer", but I first need to create an account to download it. It seems to have the functionality I'm looking for, but the 2 current comments mentioned issues to run it...

I guess you know that Outlook 2003 and up will allow you to choose the size of an image when sending. Or is that swearing here?

I do not know a Thunderbird plugin.

When sending I always put my photos through 3 steps. Crop to essential part of photo, resize to 800*600 pixels and save to JPEG 90%. That will bring a 4MB photo down below 200KB still retaining good quality for casual viewing and goes well for email sending and email storage.

I use FastStone Image Viewer for that process. If cropping is not needed you can batch process the photos.

                      Thanks...

I personally also have no issues with scaling them beforehand, but I try to make it easier for my dad... I'll check out some of the suggestions made.
(apart from the - albeit very unexpected - suggestion Fat Tone made... )

Allright, I began wondering this myself, so I checked on Picasa webpage (acceptable on mobile network connection, as long as I turn off images Downloading installer is out of the question...)

So...not only it isn't limited to Gmail (works with any email account apparently), but also...has its own built-in client for sending photos and can work in conjunction with external e-mail clients, including Thunderbird

And generally nice piece of software for organising photos...

Really? I get downloads at speeds up to 150 KB (yes: B) over mobile (using HSDPA)...

First, I have only UMTS (Nokia E50), and in this area it rarely approaches theoretical maximum.

Secondly...I'm on prepaid with data packets, not unlimited (50MB for 3€)
