  • Dead-ish computer

Supermicro X7DGU w/ 2.0 S771 Xeon (5130 I think). Not booting, not POSTing, no video, no power to kb/mouse. Fans and lights work (damn this thing is loud! its a 1U with a ton of 4cm(?) fans). One of the other guys said he had tried a different PSU too.

    Motherboard dead?

Unfortunately we don't really have any other S771 boards or CPUs laying around.

Dead mobo would be quite unfortunate, as I think it is $500+

no power to the keyboard sounds bad, does it have an motherboard power light?

You could try forcing a cmos reset, always worth a go.
Most Supermicro boards have a good bios recovery procedure which could be worth a try.

If you are not getting beeps from the mtherboard its going to be hard to determine whats happening.

You also might want to check to see if the onboard is enabled properly, eg jumpers..etc

yes has power light, sometimes its on, sometimes its not...

        reset CMOS.
tried playing with the VGA jumper, and tried an actual vid card in there too.

haven't played around with the ram much. It uses FBdimms so again its the same prob, no other ram to test with, or no mobos to test the ram in. But I doubt it is the ram anyways.

Take all the RAM out and see if you get any diagnostic beeps ?
          It should bitch at you.

It does sound like a very dead board tho...try smelling the board from close-up if possible, all over.
You might smell a burnt plastic part...

No beeps with 0 ram in it

I tried smelling, but didn't detect anything. Maybe if I leave it on for awhile it'll start burning again, but I'm not sure if I really want to do that. And it is extremely loud.
