  • P3 Motherboard Support

Does anyone own a ABIT BH6 motherboard and one of the Intel P3 CPU's with the FSB of 133? I believe these are the cpu's with the "B" designation.

I understand the aging BH6 can support the regular P3 CPU's, but before I upgrade, I'd like to see what options are available to me. Tech's at local computer stores are unsure of this, and their recommendation is to upgrade to a board with the 820/840 chipset.

    ThanX.

If the BH6 is like by BX6r2, there is a BIOS setting for 133MHz. However, it does not do the AGP bus as *0.5 but at *0.667, which could lead to problems. I'm not sure if a BIOS flash could fix this.

Don't downgrade to a 820 mobo. One of my friends got a CC820 mobo with a Cu-mine and it is a nightmare of incompatability.

That board WILL run on 133 mHz FSB, but you will need PC133 RAM. Also by doing this your are overclocking the rest of your system (PCI, AGP, & HD's) so your video card might not like this. The problem is the BX chipset lacks a 1/2 divider for AGP, PCI. I agree that you should stay away from the 820 and 840. If you want native support look for the new VIA chipset, that has the AGP 1/2 divider.

the CPU will definatly work on your motherboard (might need a bios update) but the rest of your system might not like running on the faster FSB speeds... Its a gamble. Why not save your self the trouble and just get a 100 mHz FSB CPU? Thats what id do. the 133mHz 600 is no faster than the 100mHz 600.

I have a p3 450 attached to a bx6-2. I currently run it at 600 which of course is using the 133mhz fsb. On bootup my bios (the latest version of course) reprots the chip as a 600B. I don't know for sure but it would seem logical for abit to offer the same support for the bh6 as the bx6 as they are only a couple of months apart (oops sorry i forgot, logic has nothing to do with computer hardware or software tee hee). If your mainboard does not support the 1/4 divider for the pci bus however there may be a problem as the pci bus will be running at 44mhz rather than the std 33. If your motherboard has a fsb of 83 you could test wether or not your pci devices will handle the speed (the pci bus at fsb83 is running at 41.5 so it is a pretty good bet that if it will go as far as 41.5 it wil work at 44). As for the agp divider, if you have a g400 you will probably not have a problem as i have never heard of a problem with the higher bus speed on these cards. An alternative route for you to go is to buy a p3 450 and overclock it to 600 if it will go. As far as i or my motherboard can see there is no difference between a p3 450 and a p3 600b, apart from the money of course which would buy you a spare 450 to see which one you could clock the most. At leaast if you bought a 450 and only got 558 you could console yourself that you saved a few pennies, buying a 600b and then not being able to run at it's intended speed due to your pci bus would be a tradegy. Or of course you could use the money saved to buy a be6 with it's udma66 support and 1 mhz fsb increments and a stick of 133 memory. I wish i could afford a real 600b, wouldn't buy one though.
