  • Upgrading hdd

I'm upgrading from the 74gb wd raptor to the wd Velicoraptor 300gb

I never thought the 150gb raptor was worth the upgrade, but this is

Hopefully my next boot drive will be an SSD but at the price they are at now it'll take year or 2 before they are down to humane prices

about twice as fast and about the same in noise, except a whine in the 19-20kHz range, a verry verry annoying whine that I can't stand

I've got enough irritation from my own tinitus to listen to that all day

So sadly its going back to the shop....

Well, a bit of research on dampening that annoying whine (the normal crunch crunch sound doesn't bother me at all ) I happened uppon the SPCR forum where they have discovered that the ICEpack causes most of that whine.

      Great

Ill get rid of the ICE pack and hopefully the whine will be lessened until I can't hear it

Just make sure you put a fan blowing on that HDD. That's not a lot of surface area to disipate heat.

So, how do you plan mounting it? Are there generic 2.5"->3.5" adapters?

You could also get server barebones with 2.5 boats and SAS/SATA bacpkplane, but that in itself would be too noisy and you'd have no room for big 3.5" storage drives. Also, can you post a HDTach screenshot?

I'll post a screen shot tommorow, i'll hook it up to my work computer (no I'm using the 74gb raptor again )

I'll probably suspent it in the drive cage with rubbercord (hardware store sells some that I know from usage can take years of abuse without breaking)

I was going to suggest that actually. I've always wanted to try suspending the HDD, I hear it works amazingly well to isolate the HDD from the case and seriously dampen vibration noise. Let me know how it works.

I've done the suspension thing before and it does work wonders, unfortunatley I've seen alot of the "proffesional" suspension rigs fail with rubberbands that breaks
