  • Folding with Nv GPU...

Nv has cuda driver that you can get from
Get the latest feature updates to NVIDIA's proprietary compute stack.

Since I run my Video card OC all the time, the Folding at home app is perfect for when I am downloading, so it can fold at the same time.
My bro in NY has tried in Win Vista x64 and it works fine, I have XP atm, and I just cannot visualise the folding, but it does run off my GPU when i'm not looking at it...
The GPU gets hot anyways, and one of the four cores on the CPU is 100%, mostly due to feeding the GPU probably...

youcan get the folding at home app from stanford, here

just gonna test see what sort of score i can get for a single WU.

    have fun

edit : Geforce 8 and up...

I think XP has problems, if you use HW flas acceleration, like for youtube, then there is a chance it will lock up.
you will have to right click and deselect hardware acceleration...before pressing play.
On vista you can even game according to my bro...cant watch any vids with XP...
haven't tried games, im not looking to kill my system lol

    edit :
it seems to take about 2 and a half hours per WU.
    25000 iterations.
not appeared on stanford stats site yet...so i can see the score...apparently a ps3 will score 125...

Gained around 4000 points in 24 hours, not having it on all the time since i actually like to watch videos on my pc, but hey, thats a massive increase for 24hrs...
It equals about 3-4 months with the P4 hyperthreaded...doing nothing else. 3.06GHz, 1Gb ram xppro sp2...

        Get those cards working
ATi should be just as good if not better, we'll see when i get the 4870X2 later on...

edit : clarification. The P4 in question returned results from 2005-end 2006, so the folding engine will have a little to do with it also...

So, ATi 4850 up and running at stock speeds.
1 WU is done in about 2 1/2 hours, as on Nv hardware.
          10000 iterations instead of 25000
and worst of all, only 192 points per WU...

I'll do a little review on the 4850 once I get the right HR-03 cooler delivered...got the R600 version here, and its not compatible...
Set the fan to 70% and it seems fine, 58C load, 6800rpm.
Who in their right mind puts a 10Krpm fan on a graphics card ?
On first boot up, I was very very shocked, its even louder than my special 120mm Papst...if only for 2 seconds, then it dropped right back down...

Just an uppie on the temps.
The 8800GTS-640 overclocked was with stock cooling at 100% -> 60-64C depending on ambient
Ati 4850 small OC Stock cooling at 70% -> 50-58C depending on which temp value...

Not bad for a single slot cooler.

this is truly an evil thread no one else seems to have replied in this thread, at least his is now increasing unlike before when it was stuck at 666

hmm just wondering why the ATI card has a much lower points than nVidia's. Drivers or hardware specs and configuration?
Life is a bed of roses. Everyone else sees the roses, you are the one being gored by the thorns.

I think its just semi-random, the choice of type of WU.
The WU its on now is only 177 points....
And the previous WU was completed in 1h15 mins, but for an unknown number of points...

This site gives a list of WU , on the right, GROGPU2 are the GPU WU's, and the PS3 WU's are there too..gives more info on the type of WU done ...

I'm not sure all the shaders are being used on the 4850.
I can watch film and stuff where I could not with the 8800...
I DO have to close it to open Catalyst Control Centre though...

Thread was mainly created for information purposes, any input is welcome

On Nv GPU's i could run the F@H client forever with no problems.
On ATi hardware, after about 3 days, something craps out, and all units start failing...

it freaked me out cos i thought I had killed the card, but stopping and restarting it (F@H) did the trick...

I'm not sure if its an error due to the hardware or the software, but the F@H client is the same installer for both GPU's.
I would have thought that the fact they were out of the gate with ATi hardware folding first, that they would have had plenty of time to optimise it...
maybe the architectural changes in the 3xxx/4xxx mean they have to code from nearly scratch..?

Anyhow, for the moment, 2x points for Nv hardware on F@H for the same amount of processing time...even though there are shitloads more shaders on the 4850....

Time to go to Vista64 When I got my computer I setup 2 partitions, thinking I would dual boot with vis64 and xp32. Never got around to installing XP, perfectly happy with Vista.
Hard drives are cheap, go buy one and dual boot and see what happens.

Hehe, did you see the picture in the other thread of the inside of my case ?
I already have 6 hard drives in here with 7 external, i've plugged in a media card reader and 2 of the card slots can't be shown in "my computer" because there aren't enough letters...

I have vista x64, just have to get another terabyte of storage to free some of the other drives...
I still have my past three desktops and my docs on a few drives, lots of crap that i haven't sifted thorugh yet, or prob ever will..lol, oblivion save games takes up a gigabyte a few times...

I couldn't be arsed switching between them honestly...
I got most of the DX10 of crysis in DX9 after forcing it, and i'll probably find a way to do the same until Windows 7...
