G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit
Will get a Radeon HD 4870 512 MB before xmas, but will settle for the Radeon 3300 builtin in the meantime

Why no Intel? Clock for clock they are faster, and they overclock like mad too. I only recommend AMD to people on low-low budgets who don't plan on overclocking.

If the board(s) includes the SB750 southbridge they should be good, however SB750- board are only just starting to appear.

The SB750 apparently give you batter sata support and a lot better overclocabilty at lower voltage using aac or something like that.

I have not had any expereince with biostar so I can't comment.
But personaly I have been favouring gigabyte lately, but they have not released a SB750 board yet, but when they do I will proably upgrade to one.

if you got lots of spare cash take a look at these i'll probably grab one of these if a 790fx+sb750 board doesn't come along by christmas (still happy with my current system )

Looks nice the audio sounds ideal for a HTPC

However I am using a 3870 for video on my HTPC so intergated graphics are not a high priority.
And I would prefer something with 2 or more full pcie 16x slots, but I am not sure I would ever use it in crossfire anyway.

Having said that, I think I may weaken and buy it if nothing else comes out soon enough

That MSI one looks decent as well, I may have a choice

Not a fan of Biostar. I'd go with Gigabyte, MSI or EVGA personally. Since EVGA doesn't make AMD chipset motherboards I'd go with Asus instead:

Yes their quality isn't as good as of old, but they are still a better board than Biostar. Hell, I'd get a FoxConn before a Biostar *shivers*.

The rest of it is all good. Just make sure you don't skimp on the Phenom cooling. 140 W is a lot of heat to disapate, especially if you plan to OC.

hmm exactly what I want... however asus make good hardware but I have burnt by there crappy driver and bios support before.

It will be a while before any of the above arrive in my neck of the woods, so hopefully the gigabyte or msi equivalent arrives about the same time. I don't relish the idea of dealing with asus support again.

Married man these days so cash gets spent on mostly essentials (even though I'm making more now)
What had happened is that I had bought a TA690G, a 400+X2 and a gig of RAM in March but fuXx0r3d the bios. I had ordered a replacement but somehow it did not work.
Anyway my bestman works at Intel so I had him reprogram the bios chips. Lazy bastid only sent the chips yesterday.
I had no probs with that Biostar board until I programmed the wrong bios update into it (a first for mobos) so I went back with them.
That machine is at home but will become my work machine as soon as I finish building the new one. Then I can finish editing my wedding video and send it to my friends.

What's a good fan for the AMD 790GX NB? I notice it gets quite hot at times

Best bet might be to buy a decently low rpm 40 or 60mm (gotta keep it quiet too) fan and just strap it on with some wire ties or something.
