In my opinion, the OS plus applications only need a maximum amount of memory to run. This is determined by what OS you are running, how much memory resident programs you're running, and what applications you will use under the maximum usage conditions. Personally, I use W98SE and on my computers, with varying amounts of physical memory available, use a total of 300 MB of memory. Whatever portion of this total is not covered by my RAM, I create in a permanent, fixed-size swap file. I never get an out-of-memory error message and my systems seem stable. Everyone will differ on the total amount of memory they need, but everyone only needs a fixed maximum. The more physical memory on the MB, the less you need for a swap file.

A sway file which is larger than you will ever need, just wastes disk space and, under some conditions, will actually slow down swap file access speed.

Letting windows manage your swap file size will eventually result in a fragmented swap file unless there is no other file storage on the disk in question.

Sorry Jor....was in a hurry, watching my 4 yr old daughter...and didn't want to take the time to go thru the posts to find your name...didn't mean anything by eet!!!
Anyway, for most apps, LAM...letting win run the swap works....but if you're running apps, etc, the are memory intensive, etc...its best to set up a perm swap with the same min and max...as I and many others stated, to FORCE windows to flush the swap...
As for putting the slave-swap HD on the primary slave...well, if there is no other way to do it..., but, due to the fact that IDE can only read/write from one dev at a time, its best to separtate them...put the Primary HD as Pri Master...put your CD or the Swap HD as Secondary Master, and the other one as slave...and try mix and matching with the idea that you don't want to be writing (as in installing from a CD to the HD) on the same IDE channel...
        Good Luck...

        ps.Thats why I run SCSI U2W!!!

I am getting a 13 gig 7200RPM ATA66 hard drive and I was wondering about partitioning it.

What would be the best way to partition the hard drive to get the best performance?
          Eg.
          1 gig for windows
          500 megs for swap file
          2x4 gig for games
1x3.5 gig for extra and apps

I am not really sure, since i have never partitioned my drives before.

          Any suggestions?

          Athlon 500MHz @ 750MHz 1/3

If you just run one partition, it will make 8 meg clusters on FAT 32 (the File Allocation Table that win 98 uses)...that can get a little wasteful...as the smallest file you use, even if the fule is one Kb, will be 8 megs....so probably the best thing would be to use 2 6.5 gig partitions...
As far as I have been able to tell (I ran FAT 16 part'ns for a while, cause I was dual booting with NT) running more part'ns might slow you down, but nothing that you would notice....
But, still, its much cleaner, in my mind at least, to only have one or two part'ns...I had 6 at one point...and got a little confusing...
Plus, each part'n had to have 10 % or so, you can change this, set aside for the recyle bin...
I would stick with 2 part'n at 6.5...at least, don't make either one any bigger than 8 gigs, or you will revert to the 8 megs clusters, instead of the normal 4 megs for FAT 32...

So Kelin, when I run my swap at 512min and 512max it's not a perm swap??

It might be a bit too bif... but still

Ahem. It´s 8kb and 4Kb for the clusters, kelin, not megs. Geee, that would be even worse tha FAT16
