Tonight I'll give it a go with fixed IP addresses and configure the router as switch... but how would you do it?

      The components are this:
      • mobile with usb connection to laptop
      • 2x fixed computer (incompatible with usb connection to mobile)
      • linksys router (can also work as switch)

      The requirements are:
      • internet on fixed computers
      • local network between fixed computers should not depend on presence of laptop (=cannot be dhcp)

        SUCCES!

The fixed ip didn't work either, so I decided to try a trial version of a third party router software for XP. I got WooWeb Pro (trial), set everything back to the way I initially planned (laptop to internet port of router), configured the software, and ... it works!!!!
Only odd thing: if I ping from a double-natted computer, the first ping request times out; the other 3 work fine.

The software router really is overkill for me, anyone know of a free alternative that just offers basic functionality?

Next, I'll try if I might not put the laptop on the same network segment as the computers rather than on the internet port of the linksys router. I'm guess I need to change the linksys router's operating mode, and reconfigure the software...

Attempt to put the laptop on the same side of the router:
Linksys router is assigned as Router (rather than Gateway, which is the setting when it hosts the connection)
          external (nothing connected)
          ip:192.168.3.2
          subnet: 255.255.255.0
gateway/dns: 192.168.2.254 (= the ip address the software router has)
          internal ip: 192.168.2.1

All computers are configured for dhcp and get their data from the linksys:
          ip: 192.168.2.100~149
          subnet: 255.255.255.0
          gateway: 192.168.2.1
          dns: 192.168.2.254

The internet connection does not work, and can be attributed to the incorrect gateway: if I configure it manually and set it to 192.168.2.254, it works.

          How can I solve this?
(can I have the dhcp clients receive the correct gateway?)
(can I perhaps add a route to the linksys to direct traffic to the correct gateway? if so, which one?)

Edit: I added a route in the Linksys:
          Destination 0.0.0.0
          Subnet 0.0.0.0
          Default Gateway 192.168.2.254

          And it seems to work!!!!!

Looks like I celebrated too soon...

The solution with the laptop connected to the wan-port of the router works...

But the other solution fails: local network is gone as soon as the xp-router is gone... I'm guessing there is still something wrong with the route (the route I added then gets metric x).
