Yeah, a quick check for the CPU (920), motherboard (typical x58), RAM (just 6GB) and graphics card (HD4870 1gb) brings it up to just under Canadian $1500 odd. Not a desirable situation. You're looking at least another $700 odd at least. And that's just match my i7 system.

But if you do go with the sytem, let us know.

edit : The two socket types will stay for Intel. One for mainstream, and one for Hardcore users. those of us who used to get mainstream chips and clock them higher that the extreme chips are not going to be able to play in the same ballpark anymore....It means they can keep all the i7 stuff expensive, and make the large profits from it.
If it does stay that way, then Hello AMD, cheapness, and lots of fun OCing....
Yup, and it means that i5 will be probably the best bang for buck, especially if you don't overclock (majority of people), you just want to put something together that'll do its job. Pretty much "left out" that I mentioned (AMD also had "enthusiast socket/chips"...never the best price/performance, didn't stay in "best performance" too long)

I personally wouldn't be surprised if they pulled the i5, gearing the i7 to a more mainstream market...

The Core i5's are much like the typical workstation lot, seemingly with not set time, but awaiting everyone. Also, I doubt there would be a significant price difference from a Core i7 920, which clocks like mad in the first place. So... Probably ignorable.

i7 can't be used as mainstream part - don't forget that majority of PCs sold today are laptops, where advantages of i5 (simpler motherboards, dual channel) are much more important. Econonimes of scale should do the rest...
