Never had much time for adobe, but remember instead of supporting outgoing xp and incomning vista and vista 64, they have the 2 new win 7 os's to support as well.

Thats 5 flavours of consumer OS, instead of 3 or even 2 if they went 64bit only there new OS.

MS have made a lot more work for developers in that respect and, I think they are going to get a taste of what linux fragmented market is like, except they own all the pieces.

All true. Win7 will likely be the last 32-bit OS from MS. 2008 R2 will be 64-bit only, so that will hopefully start devs down the 64-bit path if they have not done so already.

Are you sure about 2008 R2?

The requirements still list an x86 processor....

Those specs are out of date (just duplicated from the 2008 stats used for beta documentation). 2008 R2 is x64 only.

First and foremost, 32-bit is done. History. Archives. Windows Server 2008 R2 is the first Windows OS platform to go 64-bit only, and frankly it was high time.

        System Requirements
Before you install Windows Server 2008 R2, you need to ensure that the physical or virtual computer being used in your evaluation has the appropriate system resources. The following table lists the system requirements for Windows Server 2008 R2.
Table 1: Window Server 2008 R2 System Requirements
        Component Requirement
        Processor • Minimum: 1.4GHz x64 processor
        • Recommended: 2GHz or faster

        Memory • Minimum: 512MB RAM
        • Recommended: 2GB RAM or greater
        • Maximum 32GB (Standard) or 2TB (Enterprise and Datacenter Editions)
Available Disk Space • Minimum: 10GB
        • Recommended: 40GB or greater
Note: Computers with more than 16GB of RAM will require more disk space for paging, hibernation, and dump files
        Drive DVD-ROM drive
        Display and Peripherals • Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher-resolution monitor
        • Keyboard
        • Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device

Here all devs still run 2003 on their workstations. I'm getting new PC sometime next week and I'll go straight to 7 x64.

Rats about that Server 2008 R2... Guess I'll have to stick with the current one on my old dual Xeon... It runs perfectly though...

UtwigMU: I'm also running W7 on a new system, and it works like a charm!

What antivirus software works with WIN 7 ???? My McAfee doesn't like 64bit.

To be honest, the machine is only online for very limited amounts of time, and it is mainly used as htpc device; I haven't bothered putting a anti virus on it...

                Doesn't AVG work?

Well I have been using clamwin for quite a while and luckily it installs and seem to run quite well on win 7 x64.

and the discalaimer being, it does not autoscan you have to manualy scan files and do a full manual scan every now and then. But since I use script blockers in firefox and know a high risk email/website when I see it is fine for me

                  Its open source ..etc

I'm using AVG on a Windows 7 64bit PC and
                        on a Windows 7 32bit laptop...both work great.
