  • Modem settings and busy signal. Help!!

    I have an AOpen 56k V90 voice modem. Used to be that if there was a busy sig, dial up networking would hang up and dial again until it got a connection. But now, after 3 rings, my local telco has inserted a "for a 75cent charge, Telus will continue to attempt to dail this number until a connection is made" ad. I have to turn on my sound, and listen for the dialing, the busy sig or lack thereof and the connection noises. I have to cancel and redial each time I hear a busy sig. When the lines are at peak I need to do this two handed act for a long time and it gets damn annoying! Is there a way to make the modem hang up on the first busy signal or even the second one? Maybe an S-register setting or an AT command? Please help!

    try setting the time that the modem takes before it redials (in the dial up settings of dial up networking) then just as the message cuts in the modem will start to dial again. I have installed netlaunch which will continually retry until it's connected.

      You could try calling the phone company and telling them to remove the ad.

        Yup agallag, and then he can call God and ask for it to rain beer!

        s7=## -> number of seconds the modem will wait for carrier

        I dont have a modem to test it on though.

          Agallag,Telus,(nee BCTel), is a monopoly and don't give a crap. It would be nice if they did, but no. Thanx for the reply tho...

          cjolley, thanx, it sounds like that might work. Will give it a try next time I connect.

              Thanx Paul, I'll give the communis...er Telus a call, and see. I will tell them that ignorance on their part is futile.

                Wouldn't registers S9 and S10 do better??

                S7 = Remote carrier signal wait time (0-255 seconds)
                S9 = Carrier detect response time (0-255 sec / .1 sec)
                S10 = Carrier loss to hang-up time (0-255 sec / .1 sec)

                You could always try to put a comma (or more than one) behind the number you're trying to call.. It helps me sometimes. (a comma means wait for .5 seconds)

                  Assuming no luck with telco.....
                  I think about the best he can do is tell the modem to not waste too much time waiting to connect.
                  s7 is usualy defaulted to 60 sec or so. That means that after the recieving modem goes off hook the sending modem will wait 60 sec before giving up absent a busy siginal.
                  What is happening is that the modem expects eather connect or busy and is getting voice insted.
                  It then patiently waits 60 sec before giving up. Lowering s7 will tell it to give up sooner.
                  s10 only applies when the modem has connect & looses it.
                  s9 I have never used, so experiment away!
                  s7 is definitely a compromise, but it is the best I can think of.

                    I have God on the phone now, Chuck. He says due to the number of minors on Earth, he cannot make it rain beer. He suggests the following rain alternatives:

                    Locusts (an old favorite)
                    Frogs
                    Fire
                    "near-beer"
                    Diet Dr. Pepper

                    What should I tell him?

                    Paul
