  • PS/2 sampling rate question...

what motherboards (Celery/P3 or K6-x) support a 200 Hz PS/2 sampling rate? or what chipsets? i have an Asus P5A, and i can only safely take it up to 100 Hz, which helps, but 200 Hz would be nice, especially with the Intellimouse Explorer. if i can find a mobo that can do 200 Hz, i will buy it and a celery (if it is non-AMD). USB only does 120 Hz. what chipsets support 200 Hz??

oh yeah, and i know the Intellimouse 1.1A can refresh at 200 Hz, but can the Intellimouse Explore in USB mode do it?

The default USB refresh rate should be more than enough for you gaming needs. I believe USB is actually at 125 Hz. If I were you I would run the Intellimoose Exploder off USB and call it a day. You really don't need 200 Hz...your video card and processor probably don't even runs your games that fast (unless you have some insane beastly gaming rig).

But is that a mobo question? I could set it at 200 hz with my Abit BX6 and an can set it now with a Gigabyte GA-7IX (Amd 750). A noticeable diference from 80 Hz, but not that much.

where the difference comes into play is when moving the mouse very quickly, and when doing high-precision tasks, such as 3D modeling and graphics. so do all BX chipset motherboards support it? i might need a new processor anyways.

Just use a ps/2 rate that at least equals the refresh rate of your monitor, a higher rate makes no sense, since it can't show all the mouse pointer moves anyway.

BUT, if you move your mouse extremely fast, it'll smear, "and you'll see a bunch of meeces" (-WebDog). it does make a difference in apps like photoshop, 3D studio MAX, and others (trust me. i notice a difference between a 100 Hz and a 200 Hz PS/2 rate, even with a monitor refresh rate of 75 Hz). i just want to know what the highest possible rate is for the ALi Aladdin V chipset, or an Asus P5A. i don't need a reason for everything, plus my reasons aren't the same as everybody elses.

of course! that's what it's in right now! the only thing is that when my computer is doing processor-intensive tasks or loading a large amount of data off the hard drive, my mouse stops moving, and then moves very choppily, then is smooth once the activity dies down. PS/2 never does that.

Okay, just checking. Most new Intel chipsets should be able to handle the 200 Hz PS/2 port. I has been a while since I overclocked it, but it should work. I can try on P3B-F at home if you post how to overclcock the ps/2 port (I forgot).

you can get the overclocking program at fileplanet... it's called PS2RATE (makes a little sense =) ).

                    http://www.fileplanet.com/index.asp?search=ps2rate

i installed it on a school computer here, and i noticed that the rates in the list were different than mine at home. that's when i realized it auto detects them. the school computers are old P2 300s with 64 megs of ram, and 200 Hz is like a dream (with an Intellimouse). i guess i should just try and try again at home with my Intellimouse (NOT the Explorer... i get the feeling it is limited to 120 Hz in hardware). thanks for your help! try it at 100 Hz, and then at 200 Hz, and try to tell me you don't notice a difference. it's VERY slight, but move it very very quickly and you will see what i mean. but hell, it's a lot of speed going unused, so why not use it? it has no system performance hit whatsoever. it also simply makes my computer feel faster. try it and you'll see what i mean...

                      A little confused here.
Can the Intellimouse Explorer use the PS/2 adapter and run at 200Hz using PS/2Rate?

i know it can use PS/2, and it works at 200 Hz, but i'm not sure if the Explorer itself samples internally at more than 120 Hz. it takes 1500 pictures a second, but i'm not sure how quickly it translates the pictures into movement.
