The Adaptec ASC-29160 is both PCI 64 (PCI 32 compatible) so evidently it can fit in both... If not - false advertising and lawsuit to follow....

      Hey all,

So what I gather from reading the messages in this thread is that the PIII 500E, 550E, and possibly the 600E are better CPUs to overclock from Intel? I just recently got a AOpen AX6BC Pro II Millenium Edition board, and I was able to clock my aging PII-400 (o/c to 450) to an even higher 500 by going at 4x124 on my mobo. Right now I'm looking into getting a new CPU, and I was wondering what your opinions/suggestions are as to which CPU offers the best price and overclocking performance. Up in Canada, we don't have the 700E yet, but it isn't a big concern to me. Right now I'm just looking at the lower end PIII line. ThanX guys.

It does seem that the lower end Coppermines have the greatest potential. You can check the data base at Overclockers.com to see how each of the Various Coppermines are doing. There still isn't much data on the 650's and up. It kinda looks like the upper limits for the Coppermine design is just over 900MHz.

The 550E, which has taken a nice dip under $300 as of late, looks to be a good value. A 117 MHz FSB, which should be a cinch on your shiney black motherboard, will get you to 644 MHz. With a little luck, 124 MHz will get you to 682 MHz. That's pretty fast for the money.

I have my eye on the 600E, which doesn't seem to be available locally at a good price. The socket version doesn't seem to be available at all.

As many of you already know, but heck it was asked again:

I have a 550E in a IWill SlocketII on my older AOpen AX6BC (not pro or gold; no VCore changing on MoBo). It's running compleatly stable at 733MHz (133FSB). And I haven't tried higher (yet!). Also that's with the standered INTEL retail HSF. Wasn't a bad deal for ~$350US and is an even better one now around ~$260US.

Anyone know the upper limit of the AGP speed for a G400 at 2X?

PCI 64 Components can be backwards compatible. The 64Bit PCI extensions sit outside the normal PCI 32Bit socket.

Hence the 29160 fits perfectly in the PCI32 socket, with card edges exposed that would normally fit into the 64Bit socket extensions...

The card works and performs very well...

SiSoft Sandra rates the HD's on this controller at over 17.7K

i have just ordered a 550e fc-pga and i plan to attach it to my bx6r2 via an iwill slotket II. Does anyone know if the bx6r2 will have any problems running at 733? I know the board copes with 133mhz fsb as does my memory but will the board like the chip or do i have to (sigh) buy a new be6II to go with the new chip?

How does it compare to your old Ultra-Wide card (performance wise)?

In the 32Bit PCI mode, it is only slightly faster (around 10% to 20%) than it's predecessor, which was a 2940U2W (Ultra 2 Wide - 80MB/s).

When a good OC'able board is out with 64Bit PCI, I can forsee a much greater improvement, as it will then take advantage of the full bandwidth available with this card...

It mostly depends on how much you are willing to spend on how much/little performance improvements...

SiSoft gave the old U2W card around the high 15K to low 16K in performance...

                      Birdy,

If your components handle the 133FSB currently, then they should be ok with the faster processor, as it's usually only the processor that increases in speed.

Now, one caveat - as your processor speed increases, so does the capacity for throughput. While a slower processor OC'd with an FSB of 133 might not push the bandwidth as much, a faster processor OC'd with a 133FSB will. There is the possibility that you could push the components harder than they are capable of.

That's one of the reasons that OC'ing is a risky business at best...

Good luck, keep us informed of your progress...

Guyv, I get the same kind of Sandra scores you are getting now with the built-in dual channel 7896 U2W adapter on my Tyan Thunderbolt (~17+k), on my LVD Cheetah. Are your disks partitioned?

Negative, however that was again, only in 32Bit mode.... Once 64-bit is available, I should see some increase.

Also, I'm hoping that by widening the channel, if I do need higher sustained transfer rates, that it will be capable of that....

KV, what score did HDTach give your drive under the 7800 series controller?
