  • K7m MB Bios

    First of all, congratulations Haig.

Hello to all, I know this is not the K7m forum, but I know there are some K7m MB owners here and I could use your help.

Went to the Asus web site and downloaded the flash_k7.exe utility, the km1007.zip bios dtd 11-18-99 and the km.125 bios (beta) dtd 1-19-00.

Using flash_k7.exe and km.125 bios, after flashing the bios, the message "Flash ROM Completed - Pass" was displayed. However, when I pressed a key to continue, the system speaker started to sound-off and would not stop. Why all the noise from the speaker, is it trying to tell me something? I think the bios upgrade was ok, because I also got the message "CMOS checksum bad" F1 to go into setup...

I need the beta bios upgrade, because along with working with my G400 card; I am also trying to install a new Iomega ZipCD.

    Thanks, Designer

Somehow I see that this topic will be moved to the general hardware section....

    But on to your problem....

I forget which BIOS my K7M came with. Within a week of getting it, I flashed in the 1209 beta bios, and it has worked beautifully for me. Later I flashed in the 1229 bios, and Unreal Tournament got a little bit choppy on me so I went back to the 1209 bios, which I am still running.

I did not catch the line "CMOS checksum bad", though. Some motherboards REQUIRE you to go into the BIOS and at least sanity check all of the settings after you flash the bios. They use a quick checksum test to see if the bios changed. That should only happen once as long as you save when you exit the bios.

What voltage are you running your CPU at? My speaker beeped at me when I was running it at a higher voltage than it liked. If you are manually overriding the voltage, try lowering it a bit until it stops beeping at you.

Thanks for your reply Thundrchez, Where did you find the 1209 beta bios? also, which utility file did you use to flash the bios? When I flash to that bios maybe I can get AGP x2. Designer

I used the "Flash820" program to flash the BIOS on my K7M. I got the 1209 beta bios off of Asus' ftp site at the time. They may have removed it since they have come out with more recent revs. I could send it to you if you'd like.

I had to use the registry hack to force agp2x with my G400. Once I did that, everything is going just fine.

I had the same problem initially, Loaded the 125 bios and siren went on and Hard drives would not detect.....

Use flash822 along with the 125 bios. Upon reboot you will get the checksum error, go into bios and LOAD DEFAULTS settings, and that's all. then review settings and set to your liking.

            I hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies, The Asus site states, to upgrade to the 125 bios to solve my CD drive install problem. I guess for now I well head ijn that direction.

Dafrenchman, could not find the flash822 file on tha Asus site or is that a typo?

I have tried loading the 125 bios several time and still have the siren and the hard drive undetected. How did you get past this problem? Is it the flash822 file that works and not the flash820 file?

              thanks, Designer

To get the board to detect your hard drive. Go into the BIOS and then LOAD OPTIMIZED SETTINGS. On reboot the board should recognize all IDE devices. Had the same problem just last night when I decided to update my BIOS.

About the Beeping. The beeping has to do with the Hardware monitoring features on the K7M. In the BIOS go to hardware monitoring and make sure you DISABLE all fan monitoring and the very first one (i think it was something about INTRUSION...can't remember exactly). Try to DISABLE or IGNORE all monitoring that is not needed. My settings monitor only the voltages and the motherboard temperature. So all others for me are disabled.

Try this out and if you still have a problem with the beeping, post another msg here and we will try to help.

Hi all, I was able to upgrade to the 125 bios. Now my monitor only displays 640x480 in 16 colors. On Display Properties under Settings is a message "(unknown monitor)on (unknown device)". I removed the new CD-ROM drive, reinstalled the old one, reinstalled the old bios and put everything back to the original settings. Then I rebooted and still have the monitor problem. The monitor is a 21 inch ViewSonic P815 which has been detected in the past, by the Win98 SE OS on my system, using plug and pray..play. The Matrox PowerDesk and driver for the G400 video card is also on my system. The system was stable with AGPx2 running before I tried to upgrade to the new bios and to install the new CD drive.

                      thanks, Designer

You can always boot in safe mode and remove unwanted devices from device manager.

Also try to run ASD from the run command. That stands for Automatic skip driver... That may be your trouble. ASD is a fairly unknown tool so check it out.

Thanks everyone, got my hi-res display back. Now back to ungrading the bios. Then try installing the CD drive again. I do not usually try to solve two different problens at the same time. So I well get the system with the upgraded bios running stable, then I well move on to the CD drive. I well download the km126 bios and try it.

                          Thanks again, Designer
