  • 19" monitor shopping

    Hi folks,
I'm looking for a good 19" monitor. Price is definitely a factor here.
My roommate's Hitachi 751 is very nice, and it's about $450, which I can handle.
The downside is that there are no BNC connectors on there.

The Viewsonic PS790 is about $475, and does have BNC's

    What else do you recommend?

Well, considering price is an issue go for the viewsonic. I have one and have nothing but praise for it. Excellent alla round monitor and the price is just right too.

      Okay,
I've done some more hunting, and these seem to be the finalists:

      Hitachi 751
      Iiyama 451

Two of my friends have the 751, and it's very nice, but I know some of you are Iiyama fans, and it has the BNC's on it, too.

      Please help

What are BNC connectors actually used for?
do they allow you to acheve better image quality or something?

If you don't mind a captive D-SUB cable, the new Mitsubishi Diamond Plus 91 is very good.

Definitley any Sony 19", I have the GST version of the 400PS (basically the same but without BNC) and it is one of the best 19" I've seen to date. The screen is extemely flat, the actual monitor itself is quite short and stumpy so it can fit in the smallest of desk spaces (ALBPM take note) and is quite simply damn fine!!

You know it makes sense...(but I fear a little bit more expensive the Iiyahma and the like)

I own a MAG 800v and a Hitachi Elite 17" at home. The 800v's color and clarity is just outstanding. The best part: $369 at local WalMart store, less than the $700 I paid for the 17" Hitachi four years ago.

I use a Viewsonic P815 at work which is hooked up to two identical graphic workstations with G400 via D-sub and BNC. I just don't see the BNC has better image. Perhaps a higher grade BNC cable will make the difference?

PS 790 on my desk. With my G400, it looks very good indeed. For its price, it is an excellent choice.

If you are willing to spend a hundred and fifty dollars or so more, I would buy a Sony -- those Trinitron tubes are bee-yu-ti-ful!

                      Ack,
                      This isn't getting any easier.

                      Hitachi 751 v. Viewsonic PS790 v. PF790 v. Iiyama 451

I like the way the 451 sounds, but I can't find out anything about it. No reviews, or anything on Deja (well, none in English, mostly in French).

Help! I can only afford to do this once.

                        Well,
                        I think I've surprised myself.
I got an interesting tip, and I think I'm going with the Sony 420GS.
It doesn't have BNC's, but everything else seems good.

We have a lot of the 220GS's (17") here at school, and they're actually quite nice. And I found the 420GS for $529 AFTER shipping.

I'm just going to sleep on it tonight before I spend that much money. And, if I do happen to be making a bad decision, I hope that somebody here will let me know.

                        Thanks,
                        Wombat

Here's one more to confuse you. If price is a factor, check out the KDS line. Back in August I bought a 19" KDS monitor (can't remember the model just now). It's got a .25mm dot pitch and a footprint of a 17" monitor so it takes up less desk space. In August I paid $398(US). I'm quite happy with it. In the store I compared it side by side with the Iiyama and to me it looked slightly better.

I hate to say it, but Best Buy put out a bunch of new monitors last week. We are getting into new model season I guess. Anyway, they now have 19" flat screens for $400. I particularly liked the flat Samsung for that price. But, like speakers, you got to see them before you buy them. I liked the Sony's, but text wasn't as clear as on some others. Maybe that's just their bottom line monitors.

I, too, bought one of the Mag 800v's at Walmart for $369 and I was not disappointed. Nice clear text. Nice monitor for the $. But now, three months later, you can get a flat screen for just $30 more and flat is the way to go.

                              Thanks RAB.
I don't completely trust the flat screens yet. I was looking at the ViewSonic PF790, and they seem to have rather noticeable blur in the corners.

My 420GS should be here in a day or two. It got lots of really good feedback everywhere I looked, with very few bad ones. Also, I looked at 5-10 220GS's before I made up my mind.
