    Took the iPhone step

    Why it? Our internet/phone provider offered a package deal and after being in the hospital 3 times in the last 2.5 months I decided a phone with decent 'net, a fairly large screen and wi-fi connectivity would be handy. Seems to work fine, other than no Flash support, and it's fast enough.

    Any apps or accessories I should seek out? Already have a bluetooth headset though.

    Good stuff doc, though the iPhone is just around the corner...

    There are a ton of apps you can download, I have the following useful ones...

    1-Nasa
    2-Planets
    3-Beejive (for MSN with push)
    4-Bloomberg
    5-WeatherEye
    6-IMDB
    7-Dictionary
    8-Engadget
    9-Flixter
    10-Skype
    11-NFB (National Film Board)
    12-G4 (G4 tech tv)
    13-GoodReader
    14-Bing
    15-Fans (for soccer highlights)
    16-Google Earth

    Not so useful Apps (just for fun)...
    1-Vuvuzela (just because it's the most annoying thing ever to exist)
    2-Light sabers (kids and daddy love it)
    3-Tap Tap Revenge - cool game (like rock band)
    4-CC Ninja
    5-Starbucks (if you like their coffee)
    6-FingerLight (it's a virtual piano) very cool
    7-Drum kit
    8-Fast and furious - racing game for the kids, ok and me too

      jailbreak it, do the root password change, (google spirit jb for thhat, though it all changes next week with iOS4)
      WiFiFoFum for war driving and or locating free hotspots to save your 3g data bill
      iBlackList - for blocking calls, iphone itself doesn't have this ability. I haven't really used it, but looks good

      Elie covered most of it, except well Bing sucks
      a few other apps from the app store itself that might be useful
      iDecode - for the bar code stuff that keeps floating around
      fring - reasonable IM client
      PassGen - simple random password generator
      Juu nin to iro


      English doesn't borrow from other languages. It follows them down dark alleys, knocks them over, and goes through their pockets for loose grammar.

        Not sure what apps you'd be interested in, but the quick rundown of the ones I have on my touch:

        1Password - Password and more manager (has a beta Windows client)
        Air Sharing or Briefcase - Wifi File Transfer/Sync
        Delivery Status - Package tracking
        Dropbox
        Evernote
        Frenzic - Game
        geoDefense and geoDefense Swarm - Tower Defense Games
        Instapaper
        iStat - System Monitor
        NetNewsWire - RSS Reader (integrates with Google Reader)
        Pandora
        Kindle or Stanza or Classics - eBooks

        For extra battery power, you might take a look at a Mophie Juice Pack (http://www.mophie.com/). Several of them are external batteries that double as protective sleeves.

          Meebo is probably the best IM client I have found for the iPhone/iPod Touches. I believe it's free as well. It requires you create an account on their website, but it works quite a bit better than any other with the added ability of being able to log into it from a web browser.

          Other useful apps:

          RedLaser (Barcode scanner/price comparison)
          Facebook (if you use it)
          Kindle (or iBooks soon)
          Urbanspoon - Restaurant locator.
          Fandango
          FlightTrack Pro - Flight status monitor
          Strategery (Risk like game)
          FlightControl (Game)
          Colorbind (Game)
          geoDefense and geoDefense Swarm (already mentioned)

          I prefer the mobile Google Reader webpage over NetNewsWire or NewsRack. Those apps take way too long to sync and are cumbersome for dealing with high volume RSS feeds efficently. it's way easier just to use their web service.

          I do have a few GPS apps, but those are mostly to fill specific demands. Mapquest released a free navigation app that is supposed to be pretty good.

          If you use Twitter, the official Twitter for iPhone app (formerly Tweetie) is the best that exists for the iPhone.

          The Weather Channel has a decent app, but it doesn't do a whole lot that the built in weather app doesn't.

          iStat is really nice, but unless you use Mac or Linux computers it is more or less worthless for remote monitoring.

            Obviously I have a lot of stuff to preview. Thanks

            So far I've added Facebook, GPS, Contacts Plus, HD Camera, NightShot and and Yellow Pages - which has a pretty nice basic GPS built in.

              Forgot to include one I've used on other peoples' iPhones (as I only have the Touch): Camera+ (http://campl.us/). One of the best camera apps I've used on any mobile platform — wish there was something like it for Android (catch myself saying that a lot).

                  You might want to try the 'Big App Show' for Iphone.

                  It does reviews and videos of apps in podcast/videocast format - and looked quite good when I checked it out.

                  There is so much to play with now adays. I went with the nexus one here - had in import it - but happy with it.
                  Dont just swallow the blue pill.
