The usual 'fix' is to change your Google prefs to use the Elmer Fudd language or click the icon at the bottom of the page to show the 'old' display, but the former leaves you with gibberish and the latter only works for that search - you have to do it every time. Frustrating either way.
If you use FireFox there is a fix for most of this.
1) install the GreaseMonkey scripting interface add-on
2) install the Google Image Basic and Google Image - direct link scripts.
Most images you select will view in a pop up, but if you select the link in the text info it'll go to a new tab.
