HDD Problem

I have used one of those "speed you your pc" software because I have had a slow down in booting problem.
Now each time I re-start or turn on my pc, the system says "One of your disks needs to be checked for consistancy ........ and scans drive D. This is happning every time.
Is it possible to fix this problrm without foramtting drive D ?

Had to back up and format but problem sorted out.

(I personally think that quite often just formatting is often easier, faster and a better solution than trying to find what went wrong and the try to fix it)
