  • Windows lags BIGTIME on boot.

My machine boots, doe sthe POST, then does the PCI/IRQ list and it hangs for like 30 seconds then continues into windows.

Nothing is going on.. no HD lights, no HD noises.. just sits there and enjoys itself for a bit then loads up just fine.

The shut down is insanely fast though.. like 2 seconds..

Any ways.. any one have any idea?

    Thanks!

    Potshot guesses:

Is it on a network? Could be initializing connections. Or, hard drives could be spinning up, or failing to, then trying again.

Or do you have your floppy drive disabled, or if not, is working properly??

What Hawkeye said, or this are likely causes.

If you have a network card and you are not connected to a network assign your NIC an IP address.

hmm.. when I was on a network I had the same thing.. it would just sit there twidling its thumbs.. but.. i'll try assigning an IP to my NIC..

and, yes.. my FD is enabled and my HDs are fine..

HOWEVER.. i do have one partitioned into two drives, and, since Win98 is dumb, it puts the other HD in between. IE: C and E are the 13gig partitioned and D is my 6.5 gig

          could that be it?

Do you have some DiskManager Software installed to handle the drive(s)?

One of my custumers just had that one.

              Just a guess though...

                do you have SCSI?

I have found that mine pauses on startup while it checks the contents of my SCSI drives. When there is a disc in there it spins up but whent hey are empty it just sits there and then carries on.

It could be something in your autoexec or config files, try deleting them from the C: drive and then see if it still pauses.Don't worry you could always stick them back if there are programs that need them to work.

If your tweak gui installed make sure that there is not a huge delay while your function keys are available. Normally this is set to 2 seconds but i have seen it as high as 30 seconds. The result is the pc just sits there waiting for you to maybe press F8 and then carries o after a set time. I have this set to 0.

if you have a periferal defice like a paralel port Zip or Jaz drive that is hooked up but not powered on, it will always do that.

                    Has it always done this?

Was there a time when it booted Ok, if so what has changed on your system since then.

I assume from the capacities of your hard disks that they are IDE, check the settings on all IDE devices (HD's, CD's DVD's etc) there should be a setting for Master/Slave/Cable Select. If there is only one device on the cable it should be set to master, for two devices one should be master and the other slave. If both hard disks are conected to the primary IDE controller move one onto the secondary or vis-versa.

You could try running 'FDISK /MBR' to recreate the master boot record in case there is a problem with that.
When you own your own business you only have to work half a day. You can do anything you want with the other twelve hours.

Check Device Manager for question marks. Try installing drivers for the devices with question marks or removing unneeded devices.

It can't be the NIC while it doesn't ask for IP from DHCP server before it's told to by OS, and at that point no system files are loaded.

All the OBVIOUS things have been checked.

no question marks, no conflicts of any kind, I have a USB ZIP and USB Scanner but they are always on and this problem existed before them.
my autoexec.bat and config.sys files are empty as they always have been.
non of my logs (boot, frun, detlog, setup, etc.) have anything in them on what might be causing this.

and, yup, all my drives are IDE (DMA on all) and i cant swap them around since i have four drives. 2 HD's on primary IDE and my DVD and CDR on secondary IDE.

even so.. i had the same thing before the 6.5gig and the DVD drive.

I even reinstalled Win98SE about two weeks ago with my present set-up and nopthing changed.

Try giving yourself this IP address:
                              192.168.1.11
                              Subnet Mask:
                              255.255.255.0

If that don't work do what Plmr say's,boot up with out it.I heard win98 looks for an IP address automatically on boot up,don't know if it's true or not but it works for my cable modem(hybrid-one way) and that used to hang win bootup close to 4 min.now with those settings it's down to a minute in a hal.
