sixpac,

I have to quote myself here
It can't be the NIC while it doesn't ask for IP from DHCP server before it's told to by OS, and at that point no system files are loaded.
So no IP bind to that NIC will help because it isn't saved in firmware, and no system files are running right after the POST.

      Hello,
      Excuse me for my english...

      Just an idea,

If your have allways the same problem,
try to remove all components what no need to start your computer.

Fonts. Consider reinstalling them... or repair the Fonts folder, or delete some, perhaps, if you have a huge number of them.

If you read your bootlog very carefully, you might find that some (unused, I would think) fonts aren't loading properly.

Fonts get weirdly corrupted out of the blue for unknown reasons, and that can really screw up Windows without much of a clue to lead you on, in my experience...

Also uncheck the DMA from the CD-R (leave it on the DVD if that works OK).. actually, I'm surprised your CD-R works with busmastering on....mine sure didn't. You may be able to disable bm for each of the 4 IDE devices in your BIOS as well....

        Just a concept...

Connected to network, aren't you? All network cards do this, my friend just installed a home network and is experiencing the same 20-30 sec delay on bootup before he gets into the Windows. It seems that the card is somehow checking the network and it takes quite some time.
Someday, we'll look back on this, laugh nervously and change the subject.

The simplest way is to use TweakUI, which is in the tools\reskit\powertoy directory of the original Win98 CD, at Windows Magazine's download site if you have Win98 SE (MS took it out of SE) or at the Microsoft download center if you use Windows 95.

If you're installing for Win95, 2 things to be sure to do...

Download the exe into a dedicated folder, because when you click it, it will decompress a lot of files, and you don't want them scattered all over the place.
Do not use the setup.exe.. that installs all of the several programs and many of them are not necessary or useful to the average user.
What you want to do is: right-click on tweakui.inf and select 'install' from the context menu. This will install the TweakUI Control Panel, which is the main point of this exercis

              e. After that, you can read the readme and see which of the other components you want to install by using their .inf files.

Having installed the Control Panel for any Windows version, go to it and choose the last tab, "Repair". The Win98 version has a drop-down menu, but 'font folder' is the top selection, and the Win95 version has each repair option separately. Click the button to repair the font folder.

You can also do this manually if you know where all your fonts came from, but it's a pain... However, it's a very good idea to have this for emergencies.

Create a dedicated folder--in the root directory, not the Windows directory-- or on a separate partition if you've split up your drive.
Copy the contents of C:\Windows\Fonts to this folder. If you have the MS Office CD, you can copy the contents of valupack\msfonts to this folder, as well as any other fonts you may have downloaded, or can find on other word processing program disks. You now have a backup of your fonts, which hopefully contains no corrupt fonts. Feel free to save this folder onto CDR, Zip or SuperFloppy if you can... but if you have a lot of fonts, the backup might be too big for some of the smaller media.
Open the Control Panel and open the fonts folder. Select all the fonts and delete them. (Windows needs a couple of them, and so won't let you delete them.) Your screen will suddenly look hideous, with the system font only; don't worry. Open the File menu and choose 'Install New Font'. Point the search to the folder you just created and let Windows reinstall all the fonts. Your screen should go back to normal.
Reboot, just to be thorough.
This procedure works well if one or more of your fonts has gone corrupt, but you don't know which one... and especially if you do know which one, via reading the bootlog, this way you have a (hopefully) clean copy that you know exactly where to find, as opposed to scratching your head and saying, "Now which d@mn program installed Poster Bodoni Bold???"

But obviously, for simple repair of the folder, TweakUI is much easier, and enables you to customize many other properties of Windows as well.

                  Umm,
Why are we still trying to help this guy? I've seen many suggestions for him to play with the NIC, and yet he refuses. No new advice until current advice is taken.

I had a similar problem... I have a nic with both an rj45 connector and a coax connector.... I just stuck a terminator straight onto the coax and it doesn't give me the pause anymore... I'm not sure what you would do if you just had the rj45 connector...

anyway.. hopefully this helps someone... later

Ive got a Compaq -Intel based NIC that looks for network boot code (bootp?). On a P133 it stalled bootup about a minute, on a 500AMD about 5 seconds.

                        It sits unused.

Maybe it's doing the IRQ shuffle. Do you have any slots on manual? If not, you could try 'reset configuration data' and reboot

Well.. whatever it was its now gone.. I pulled out all my cards save gor the G400 and attempted to reinstall Win98Se which did nothappen. ended up deleting tghe window sdirectory and I reinstalled it and everything is all good now.

so.. PROBABLY WAS NOT THE NIC since its all in there and all is good..

Any ways, other than the loss of some minor info all is good after 4 hours of D/L from the net and I now have all my softwares back.

Powerdesk 5.5 rocks BTW.. much faster than either 5.3 or 5.41 for me..

Thanks to all that tried to help!!!!
