  • Standalone network scanner

I've used some office grade all-in-one scanner/printer/fax machines that allow you to scan an image and email it (or fax it).

I like this concept, since it's standalone and does not require compatibility with a certain OS, etc. Basically it will never go obsolete, so long as networks don't change too much.

Are there smaller standalone scanners like this that could be used for home or small office?

My father has this Samsung all-in-one (colour laser). I believe the models with network connection also supports network scanning. Most all-in-ones with network connection should...

So I might have to buy an all in one just to get a damn scanner on a network?

I think I need something like this, except not $900.

Beware that with HP printers and AIOs you need to install about 700MB of software (you can get away with corporate drivers of 50MB max in some cases).

Low-end HPs don't offer scan and mail but offer scanning from any workstation on a network.

Some SB I support have Ricoh inkjet AIO and the software is utter crap.

Yeah, I'd want one where I don't have install any software on any machine.

2007ish the company I worked for sold about 5 600 Euro HP standalone scanners to some financial company. Within months all went to warranty repairs.

                Eek.

In other news, I think I found a good solution.

These are on clearance until tomorrow:

                $150 fax/scanner/printer marked down to $80.

I won't use the printer aspect of it.

But here's what makes it doable for me - I can scan to an SD card or USB stick. That makes it at least somewhat standalone. For $80, I'm sold.

Update - this thing is awesome for the price. Wireless scanning and faxing is cool. The ability to read and write to SD cards and USB drives is cooler.
