  • AMD Bulldozer

    http://www.hardware-infos.com/news.php?news=3856 (in German)

According to this there is a chance that some, probably not all, AM3 boards will be Bulldozer capable with an update. I don't know if you need a special AM3 Bulldozer or any old Bulldozer will do but we'll know more soon because....

Rumor has it AMD will show off Bulldozer for the first time this week at CeBIT. To be expected since the first batch of Bulldozer chips are rumored to hit in April in limited quantities.

If Bulldozer is a game changer like Llano appears to be it will shake up the processor industry significantly.

I'll believe it when I start seeing reviews. AMD's cpu's have been good, yet far behind Intel's for quite a few years now.

Well cool, I am still hopeful it might work.

But it just may be recent revisions of 890 series boards, which may have already have some ground work done.

My understaning changes to hardware voltage/power planes were made in am3+ limiting what you can do with a bios update.

I am not particularly optimistic that I will get a am3+ cpu working in my 790fx.

Same here, but you forget that the last time AMD built a CPU from the ground up it trounced on Intel's procs for nearly two years. I've been keeping up with Bulldozer tech releases and the information released points to some real big performance boosts.

Even if Bulldozer is only on par with Sandy Bridge it will force a high-end price war which will drive down prices on all procs by mid-summer. And with the 900-series chipsets coming out with the 7000-series GPUs it could be the dominate platform by year's end.

        We shall see.

Zambezi is the code name for the desktop equivalent of the Bulldozer chips(server)

It also seems am3+ will support on cpu PCI-e lanes, which resuse some pins form am2/ddr2 stuff, so there may be funtional clashes as well.

Price/performance (and reliabilty)wise AMD has been doing well for quite a while ... but its hard to argue with intels abilty to gauge its high end chip customers for fun and profit.

From what i've read so far, AM3+ has one extra pin, so it can't be compatible with AM3.
AM3 can be put into AM3+ though.

The source was a rep at Cebit iirc, i'll see if I can find the link.

Asus is claiming comptabilty with am3+

Looks like GuchiGuh may have picked a winner the board he grabbed last year is on the list.

It seem AM3 cpu's actually only use 938 pins but have 941 holes and am3+ socket has 942 pin holes 940 pins.
Plus maybe asus did crafty forward thinking when the disgned those boards.

AMD is officially claiming the opposite.

I am JF-AMD, not JF-ASUS. Please ask ASUS instead. They are the one saying that they will support it. All I can say is that AMD is not supporting BD in AM3 sockets.
