    Pioneer 104s & Regions

    Hi,
    I just got a Pioneer 10/40 slot DVD drive.
    Is there something about regions I should know before I power it up. I seem to remember hearing something about jumpers and regions to be done before the drive is ever powered up to keep it reagion unlocked.
    Or, maybe I'm hallucinating.

    The issue with jumpers doesn't apply to your drive. It is region locked as you bought it.

    To make the drive region free use the patched Pioneer DVD-104 firmware 1.23. Available at Fekete Istvan page referenced below:

          Sorry.. Ahem... Dearly ... Well... Ahem.. Those of us gathered here on this sad, sad occasion would like to lower our sine-waves in honor of the lost and lamented PS. However if we did so, our systems would crash....

          At least you didn't try to use your motherboard as a door stop....

            CJolley - If you want to play DVDs sold in the far east or Europe (or anywhere outside the western hemisphere for that matter) you will need to change the region. You also need software decoding that allows region change. So far, I have not had the need to change regions, and I have played many DVDs of various kinds. Perhaps, the US (region 1) is one of the places which has the least need of region changes.

            Probably not necessary unless you can't play something you bought overseas.

              I have just got one of these drives and i was peomised that it was region free. It is. I know that there are problems with some versions of the firmware in that they are restricted to changing the rgions five times and then it's locked for good. My firmware is 1.23 so you can probably download this from dvdutils.com They have a special page especially for these drives so there is plenty of help available.

                Its us poor Europeans (Region 2'ers) who are more interested in region changes. The current prices of shop bought disks over here (UK) are up to £20 (that's roughly $32) and the selection is comparatively poor at present. Hopefully things will change gradually especially if some consumer watchdog gets it's teeth into the issue at an early stage.

                Why should a DVD be more expensive to produce than a videocassette after all.
