Celeron vs PII

Hi I'm was wondering what sort of performance boost I'd get replacing my PII266 with a Celeron 400 or 466. Is it worth it or should I just pick up a regular PIII. My mobo doesn't support a coppermine chip (my first choice/wish).

It's all matter of money...
Btw Which mobo do you use ? Does not support Coppermine ? (Bh6 ?).
If you have enough money, there's a lot of option, go with a PIII regular or change your mobo for a better one and get a 500 Coppermine (cheaper if you can find them)and o/c the hell out of it.
If you are more restrain on money, take a 400 celeron and o/c it (500 easily reachable, if your board support 83Mhz FSB), you'll see a good gain in performance. (a 400 o/c to 500 is what I used).A 400@500 Mhz celeron will give you a pretty decent performer, not far and sometimes superior to a PIII 450 (depending on the application/games).

Your best bet in a celery overclock is the 366@550.
It is a straight 66mz to 100mz bus change & is almost sure to work.
I did one this weekend for a nephew.
1. each cheap ($80) asus M99b
1. each celery 366 ($45)
1. each 64mb generic PC100 sdram ($50)
1. each $10 heatsink W fan (vantec)

Runs great at standard voltage & 53C working hard.

Go for the Coppermine, my 500e is now at 690 FSB of 138, will go higher except my memory is holding me back, PC133 on its way.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I've got the Asus P2B board rev 1.02, it can't supply the voltage for a Cumine chip. I've got good Crucial ram already so I guess I try and track down a 366 and overclock it. I like the option of going straight to the 100 FSB, that way it can't mess up my PCI cards. Even if the celeron were to cook, it's so cheap now that it's not like frying a new $400 chip.

First, you should flash your bios, as there are higher ones availiable. And if mnoney is a prob, get a celery and oc it. I have a 466 running at 525. I would run it at 623 but my hard drives won't take it. That is actually what I wrote this note to you about. The 83 mhz fsb doesn't always work with your other components. Alot of harddrives don't like it. And by not like it, I mean that they destroy fats and dir structure(in my experience). So before you try the 83mhz fsb, be ready to do a clean install of your OS, cause you might need it. Oh, and it does seem to work at first, but then... Good luck
