Jammrock, I wouldn't completely agree with you about when the power supply goes out it takes everything with it. I can only speak from one data point, because I've only had one p/s go out on me.
I have an ol PPro system with SCSI and all kinds of stuff working on a 250W power supply. I added 128MB of ram, and everything was going ok. Then one evening about a week later, in the middle of doing something, *poof*, it dies. I got a wiff of an electrical burnout in the air. The power supply went belly up on me. However, within a couple of days I got a new case & p/s (I wanted a FULL tower SuperMicro SC-750) with a 300W p/s and moved everything over. Everything worked...mobo, cpu, ram, cards, hd, cdrom, etc. The only thing that died was the power supply.
