It does look like a fun base to start of many many projects.

Keeping my eye on this too.

    Have you seen www.Openpandora.org ?

Its also on my shortlist of Geek-toys.

      other interesting ARM-based projects:

Pandaboard. Some issues: no SATA, ethernet hooked up through USB bus.

Samsung Origen. Similar concerns as Pandaboard.

Trim-Slice. Desktop replacement with nVidia Tegra2. Issues: Limited support for MPEG4 AVC acceleration, general driver support.

And I'm sure you've heard of the recently announced $35 Indian tablet computer too...

QNAP NAS (although you pay for it) have a much higher build quality. They have a line of NAS with the same SoC as the Globalscale Sheevaplug and Dreamplug.

Good that you added the headsup, I did not know...
I also once read a PC about the size of a socket (to be put in a wall!), but forgot the name.

for £20 could you go wrong???

I want one for a combined nav station, weather station and metric processor built into my boat

Also for a small MAME device

Another low power (max 12W during load with SATA HDD activity) yet powerfull (dual ARM11 core) device to keep your eye on (e.g. check if the community manage to make it boot debian):
                Medion NAS @ Aldi.

Apparently it has been on offer in various countries including Germany and Australia, with others to follow.

A bit a different product - currently prototype - but also looks interesting for some things:

(ARM Cortex A9 + quadcore ARM Mali 400MP)

This is supposedly around $200 though, whereas the Raspberry Pi is about $30 ?

Looks like a single disk NAS, but at 99Euros, you can't really go wrong

Production or the RaspberryPI has started!

I got more interested when I could not really find a streaming media client I like. Combine this with a USB touchscreen monitor and some speakers, and if the OS has some good media client software it might be just perfect!

For $35 it the Pi B could be a fun toy to play with. I have no idea what I would do with it though. A 700 MHz ARM 11 core doesn't give you a lot of processing power, but the video encoder might make it a worthy media extender. I wonder how MythTV works as a Windows Media Extender.
