  • Microsoft Hololens

Apart from yesterdays Windows 10 introduction, Microsoft showcased Hololens:
Introducing HoloLens 2, an untethered mixed reality headset that's designed to help you solve real business problems today using intelligent apps and solutions.

To me, it looks like this might be the next big thing in computing and working... On the demo video, they have the example of the design of the motorcycle, with the AR 3D model on the desk and in the room. But they still have real monitors...

I would just get rid of the monitors, and also have them displayed by the AR system. For better quality, one could consider plain black panels as placeholders to where you will project the image.

For my workplace, I could imagine a desk, which could be empty, apart from a keyboard and mouse. A PC can be hidden somewhere. The AR could provide one or more displays, in the configuration that would be most useful for me (depending on coding, writing or searching things). An AR calendar on the wall would hold deadlines and other schedules. On the desk could be some notifiers for email and some AR shortcuts: one virtual book that gives quick access to all reference works or so. It could even decorate the walls somewhat. I could have exactly the same setup in any room (if I move the pc, mouse and keyboard), with minimal hassle.
If I need to just read an article for review, the mood of the whole room can be changed (no calendars, no distractive monitors), even different wall decorations.

I saw positive things in Google Glass, but not enough usability for everyday work. Hololens IMO could really transform the workplace... This can provide an iron man style interface! And not only that... also board games (virtual game board, automatic scoring), toys. Perhaps the technology is not there yet to do it fast enough or smooth enough, but this could be huge...

    What do you guys think?

It could be very powerful provided they get it right. There are a million potential uses for AR. It needs to work very well and be at the right price-point.

They use the term 'high resolution holograms' liberally. They really do need to go high-res to e.g. replace your desktop monitors. They are typically 1920*1080 in a 20-24" diagonal for a desktop, and much higher pixel densities in many laptops. Those displays might only occupy a visual angle of 30 degrees. So I would say an AR display should be at least 4 times that resolution. That I would love to see.

True... That might be the reason why they are not including this in the showcase. All the items in the demo video are perhaps less resolution dependent. But even if getting rid of the monitors is not the first option, the added things are also interesting...
I for one hope they get it right. I really liked the Surface Table concept, but it never got off the ground...

Do report back when you do (if you are allowed to)... I would love to read more on this: it looks exciting and useful, a first step to a digital office that does not constrain. A lot will depend on applications, which will be more difficult to make (and more graphics intensive)...
