3Com Sportster 33.6 not pluging and Praying?

Just got my old 33.6 external 3Com Sportster modem out again (too use as a backup modem), installed it on the serial port Com1, but it is not plug and playing, have also tried com2, and i have bought a new Belkin Null modem cable, still not seeing it.

any ideas

It won't plug and play. It's an external. You just have to tell Windows there's a modem on Com1, and what kind it is.

Tried telling windows what it is on Com1 & Com2 still no go

just get a windows error saying that it cant find the modem or check the interupt on the port, (Modem diag screen)tried playing with interupts still no go

Null modemcables are for conecting two computers, not a modem!!

Gurm, modems are PNP!
My old noname 33.6 did PNP detect and all other modems i have ever come in contact with does to! (besides 9.600 bps modems)

Technoid is right about the PnP of the modems and the Null-modem cable.

You need a modemcable (usually plugs into the big serial port at the back), and then assign either COM1 (COM3) or COM2 (COM4) to that port through BIOS and Windows.

The last modem I installed in that way was a 14.4k at work.. And boy does that one make a noise when it calls in...

A NULL modem cable is for NO modem. Null = zero. You use it connect the com port of one machine directly to the com port of another machine. It wil never work hooking up to a regular modem, or any other device. There is a crossover of wires in a null modem cable. the pins of one end do not match the pins of the other end. Whatever you think that other cable it, it isn't a null modem cable.

Have a identical modem in work using a null modem cable, serial connection into PC, 9 pinserial 25 pin into Modem, all works ok????

I agree with Kruzin and Jorden. Modems are connected through straight wired cables and they can be PnP. Null modem cables have at least the request-to-send and clear-to-send as well as the transmit data and receive data wires crossed.
If the modem does not work with a straight wired cable you might want to try using a serial mouse just to check if the com ports work on the machine.
It would be very weird if this modem uses a different cable. If it does, the modem port is wired non-standard and requires you to use an original cable although I haven't seen this so far. 25 to 9 pin conversion does not mean that the wiring crosses RX/TX and RTS/CTS but connects from 25 pin wiring to the according 9 pin connector.
