  • Sh*t, I need help badly!!!

I just "updated" my bios of my K7-PRO and now my comp won't boot. I don't even get a monitor signal. I did the update as I as supposed to do and then it automatically reset the comp.. It went through the memory test and then said something about a checksum error. I reset and from there I have gotten nothing. Need your help soon!!!

    Thanks,
    Dimitri

You should've reflashed your BIOS, Dimi.

Do you have a backup of the old BIOS? Do you possibly have it on a floppy? You could try to make a start-up floppy on another PC, with the BIOS-flash program on it and the old BIOS program. Make an autoexec.bat on the floppy in which you tell the BIOS-flash program to start up and flash your BIOS with that certain file (either the old, or the new one).

Remember for a next time: If you get a checksum error, DO NOT SHUT DOWN YOUR PC, KEEPING REFLASHING THE BIOS OR FLASH IT BACK TO THE OLD BIOS FILE (MAKING A BACKUP FIRST !!)

You might've damaged your BIOS chip now. Be warned...

Jord, how do I reflash the fu*ker if I can't see what the fu*k I'm doing? I just read that there have been others who have this problem with the 1.04 bios over at amdzone.com. At least I'm not the only one. Oh well. If only I looked at sh*t before I did it. How do I set up a startup disk on another pc with my bios flash program!?! Thanks for the quick reply Jord. Glad you're online now. I may be needing to send you a nice thank you somethingorother if you can help me on this one....

As long as it isn't Holly by email...

        Okay, I'll try...

        1) Get a floppy, 1.44Mb ofcourse. Format it on another PC using the /s command in DOS, or format it completely in Windows with the copy system-files checked. Don't use quick-format, as this will usually go wrong!

        2) Copy to this disk the (backup) BIOS file, and the flash program.

2a) If you have saved the backed up BIOS file on your harddrive (which is stupid, but who knew?) and you can't reach it, or you have to take out your hdd and hang it in the PC you're using now (too much of a hassle IMO), then goto your mobo's site and download the BIOS file before the faulty one! Save this to the floppy.

        3) Make a file on it called autoexec.bat (using either edit in DOS or a text-editor in Windows). In this file you put a link to the BIOS-flasher. (i.e: A:\flashbios.exe) Then save it.

        4) Just hope that somewhere in your BIOS you had the option Boot from A/C/etc. set, and boot your PC with this floppy in it's floppy drive.

        5) When it will boot up (which I highly doubt), enter the name of the saved BIOS file in the flash program.
(If you get this far, DO NOT CLOSE DOWN YOUR PC UNTIL YOU'RE 100% CERTAIN THAT IT'S OKAY !!)

5a) When you encounter the checksum error again, you could try to press the Del key (or whatever you need to enter the BIOS) and try resetting it to factory settings.

5b) When you encounter the checksum error again, close down, get your manual out and check if there's a CMOS jumper on the mobo that you can open/close to reset the CMOS. Follow the manual on this procedure, then try to start of at point 4 again.

But to be honest, I think you just lost your BIOS. Sorry.

        I'll be hearing from you.

        Jord.

          Jeez!

          I LOVE this place.

Good Luck Dimitri...you'll learn, and eventually, perhaps even not suck at UT.

Hey Jord: Have you considered a disk image that you could send with all this stuff on a .zip? To another Comp, (of course..Duh!..the one Dimitri is talking to you on NOW) If I were him and had never been through this, I think you'll agree that it may be quicker, (although not more instructive to lurkers ) by way of getting our UT wannabe back on line.

Dimitri: Been there, done that, and I FEEL for ya man! But there's always a solution. The only problem is ones and zeros have no real concept of TIME.

...And yeah, you owe Jord for this one. My suggestion would be a double case of Oranjeboom, or (IMHO) a bottle of Balvenie Doublewood single malt scotch.

Provided, of course that you get back up! (But you will!!)

Ok Jorden. Everything boots up, but I still can't see anything. The christmas tree light farthest farthest from my board is red (although the other three are green). I can't find the stupid d-led booklet that came with my board. You know what it means? The boot disk is ok though thanks.

Bixler, no ain't the time bro.....

Could you possibly find a (very) helpful friend with a K7-pro willing to do a hot-swap of the bios chip?

                Muad'Dib,
If worse comes to worse and your bios chip is damaged, contact the manufacturer of your mobo, many times they are willing to sell you another one, most bios chips are of a socketed type and are replaceable.
You may have to go through a
run around locating where to call, etc.,but check it out.
                Good luck!

                Congrats,
                Jorden

I cleared the CMOS and now it works. Thanks all for your help. Sorry Bixler for jumping at you. I just have a short temper when I screw around with my comp. Sorry for taking it out at you.

While Jorden was helpful, I'd just like to point out that in case I missed it, Jorden was not the one to suggest taking out my battery, it was my roommate. So props to him. Although I still owe you more than some TR4 cheat codes, eh Jord.?

                          Maybe this'll help, Dimitri...
Color Swatches (there are additional pages after the first)
                          Color Selector page

Find a color you like and replace the hexcode in the "font color=" tag... or you could always just replace the hex code with a word, like *cough*"blue"*cough*....
j/k Dimitri, I learned what HTML I know on the fly from using the forums too...
