Just got my cable modem hooked up on Saturday!

Depending on the server, I can get anywhere between 12 & 150KB/s (downloaded the UT bonus pack in 1.5 minutes last nite).

My ping in TFC used to be 150 at the lowest but last nite I was playing in the low 50s. Almost unfair to snipe at that speed.

I played UT on the Matrox server last nite and where I could snipe, I owned everyone (including Haig!) but if I had to run around, everyone broke a big piece off of me. I don't know the maps at all - that's my (latest) excuse...

hehe, ya i know that one, i may have to think up some new excuses my self lag just aint going to work anymore after the dsl getts hooked up. oh well have to see what happens it just may be that lag was killing me i used to do pretty well at 200 to 300 ms pings in hl and ut but it's those momentary drops to 600 /900 that kill your fun.

Well, the results are in....no DSL providers that "own" the territory are planning to be in the area...PERIOD. Straight from 2 providers..too small a community (<50,000)to be worth the effort. All I can hope for is that BellAtlantic\Infospeed steps up to the task as they claim to be planning in 6 months or so......Dammit! I want it NOW

Is it just me (and this is NOT a hack on your nation or nationality) or are the Internet access options in the UK just a big bowl o' crud? Every time I talk to someone from England, all I hear is how they pay by the minute, or are limited to low speeds like 512k... is it just your area, or all of the UK that's like this?

P.S. I'm still happy with my cable modem, thank you. I get 1500/512, with an upstream uninhibitor I get 1500/3000, and on good days I spike to 2000/3000. It's $40/mo and I've had the same IP address for a year now.

well it took about 30min for the install and i was getting 800/down and 110/ up load speeds. then i addjusted the windows rwin values and now i get 1200 down qand 110/132 up. my ping in counter strike was 66 from 2pm till about 8 then it went up to about 180/200. ut was fast and well (too darn fast) i am really begining to hate hammer wars.

oh my best download speed was 149k/sec 41 megs of counter strike 6.1 downloaded in 4.42 min (about 4 and a half min)

god i love dsl (now i just have to go around changeing my email address in all the fourm's i read.

Are there any settings that can be tweaked to speed up a cable modem?

I'm happy with my increase from 56k but if I can get it going faster...!

                Ahartman:

The only tweaking that can be done for cable modems is as follows:

                1. If you had previously tweaked your machine for dial-up, it needs to be untweaked in order to run correctly with Cable or DSL.

                2. You can, if you have certain types of modems (LanCity or... I forget the other brand), get a hack to turn off the upload speed limiter.

Other than that, you get what you get.

My friend is running a cable modem accellerator program that he downloaded from the net. He reports that it did increase the download speeds. I asked him to send it to me so I will check my system when I get home. I don't know much about the program...

Xippo: all that program does is tweak the buffer sizes. Win2k and Win98SE ship with buffers set to the correct sizes, however those sizes are often modified by overzealous programs such as "modem tweakers" for dial-up, or other system utilities.

All you people are saying things like "I get 1000/512" and stuff... but what kind of speeds do you get in realworld performance when you are downloading? Right now, I have one of the best internet connections availble (universoty campus), but in 5-6 years I won't be living on the campus any more. By then you should be able to get ASDL here in Holland. So I want to know what speed I can expect... in KBps (KiloBYTES/s). Both pracical MAX speed and speed from a server like Download.com.

I will give a example of my own connection:
                        Theoretical Maximum Internet speed: 12,5MBps (= 100Mbps)
Practical maximum speed (highest I ever witnessed) = 4MBps (or 32Mbps)
Downloading BEos4linux.tar.gz (Beos 5.0 for Linux) from the nearest tucows site = 2126KBps avarage (measured with DU meter)

We're talking theoreticals, but also practicals.

My theoretical maximum download bandwidth is limited to 1.5mbps (megaBITs/s), which is what I pay for. That translates to just under 200K (kilobytes) per second. However, sometimes, when there's nobody else on my cable system, I see closer to 250K/s. That's rare. On a regular basis, I see more like 150K/s, which is about 1.2Mbps. Not too bad.

DLS is a guaranteed speed. It's digital, and it's measured. You get EXACTLY what you pay for, ALL THE TIME.

I like the fudge factor in my cable modem. I like being able to bypass the upstream lock and get 3-5mbps uploads. Heh. But the downside is that some days when it gets crazy congested, or some idiot a block away tries to Smurf South Africa, I only get 50K. Such is life.

yes rwin and mtu can be adjusted for dsl.
(mostly reseting them to highspeed network setings, but some dsl setup software messess with the tcp/ip settings so i would check them and change them.) i had set my system for modem use and tweeked it. but after installing the ppoe software that snet uses my changes were blown away. download speeds were 800/110 then i readjusted the rwin values as discribed at www.dslreports.com
(tweek tips) my download speeds went to 1.2 1200/ messing with the mtu settings made slite changes in my upload speeds.

download's in k/ per sec's so far i have downloaed from servers at speeds rangeing from 20 to 149k/per secdepending on the server's location and time of day.

                            hope this helps.

Yes it is but to the first router only. After that you will share a pipe with thousands of users. And that pipe can transmit only a small fraction of what would be needed if those thousands of users would max out their connection at the same time.
