  • Back to Win98SE? Did I hit my head?

I musta hit my head or run out of oxygen while working out today.

I've been running Win2000 Pro since it hit the shelves 2/17. Even went to the launch at Universal Studios (played hookey from work!).

Yes, it's extremely stable. Runs almost all the applications I have to throw at it ('cept for WordPerfect - Corel can't figure out what to do).

But...I have several multimedia/interactive applications that won't run on it. Stuff that I'd like to use.

Has anyone else had the same delusion and gone back to Win98? Or have I completely lost it in my old age?

I still dual boot awaiting support for all my hardware and hopefully some remaining software. UMAX has not come across yet for the scanner, Hollywood + is still beta but works, and PowerQuest required an upgrade to version 3.01 for DriveImage and 5.01 for Partition Magic for Win2000 support.

Adaptec Direct CD wont work unless you have version 3.XX, and you are unable to load version 2.5 and apply the patch. They say support is coming. EZ CD Creator 4.0 works with some patches though. Or you could buy the latest version and life is good. All it takes is more money.

So how many others have software that needs to be upgraded to work with Win 2000?

I still can't get my modem working in Win2k and it doesn't look like my modem maker will ever make drivers for it either. Oh well, I get broadband next month and all I need is my NIC.

I still have win98se lurking on my HDD to dual boot if I need to. Haven't done of late, however.

I've found W2K to be very nice with support for everything I have:

P2-350(Duh!), SuperMicro P6SBA (with ACPI eventually), TNT2, 3Com 3C905B-TX 10/100 PCI, SBLive, several 56k modems (all Rockwell/Connexant etc), Advansys SCSI card with Yamaha 6416 writer, HP LaserJet 4000, HP DeskJet 895Cxi*, Epson Stylus Color 460*, HP ScanJet 4100c and Iiyama 19" VMPro 450.

However with the HP stuff it's basic drivers (although very nice USB Pnp) - limiting my scanner to 150dpi (I think) and printers to 600dpi (lj) and 300dpi (dj). So I use Windows 98 when I need to scan/print at high res (or play some rare games).

I have quite a few computers now at my house and I'd really like to get one of the server versions though (with features like software striping of drives).

Windows 2000 has always worked well for me and I found that I never needed to boot back to win98se so I installed Linux (Mandrake 7.0) over the win98 drive. Now I spend time researching how to get the hardware running with Linux (there is alot to learn). Win2k is my stable os now.
System: PIII cu @800 on 133fsb, pc133 memory, Adaptec 19160, cable on lan (win2k ICS), P3V4X, G400Max, Hauppage 401 tv tuner, SBLive, USB kb/mouse/printer/game controler, dvd and cdwr. Works perfectly with Win2k I am at about 50% with Linux after 10 days.

I think you will find your interactive multimedia apps are patchable or the incompatibility can be worked around.

I personally haven't even considered going back to Win98. The WinME beta graced my 2nd partition for a while, but now it's gone as well.

                Hey dwright,
You should post your problems over in the "Alternative Lifestyles" section. We're pretty helpful over there, I think.
