which is best SCSI?

Does anyone out there know which is the better SCSI card. The choice i have is between

Iwill 2930U
Adaptec 2940.

Any help?

Adaptec 2940 ? not u/uw? than I thing it only does Fast SCSI-2 (max. 10MBps).

The Iwill 2930U will do 20MBps, because it is Ultra-SCSI. Looking at the number of the Iwill card, you would believe it uses an Adaptec chipset. I would try to confirm that, and if it does, it certainly is the better choice of the two (and you can even use Adaptec drivers for it).

No, I think the Iwil cards use their own chipsets - cunningly labelled to look like adaptec cards to steal some of their market share.

Also, I didn't know you could get a 2940 which isn't either a U or a UW... ?

You are right! I just checked their site, and it uses an Advansys chipset.... unbelievable they are allowed to use a model number so similar as Adaptec's!

I would go for the Adaptec 2940. It is more than fast enough for SCSI CDROM's and CDWriters. And for HDD, the iWill Ultra-SCSI controller still is not fast enough. The Adaptec has much broader support than the iWill, and I don't know how Advansys chipsets perform.

Avansys! Yeah, they're the ones! They're not bad cards/chips actually (in a local computer shop where I work, we sell them all the time). Of course adaptec has better support though. After all, they 'move the data that moves your world!'

Iwill keep the 2940 in the second pc and if and when i get a scsi CD for the main system Iwill have a spare card to run it.

What about Tekram? Does anyone have any experience with them? I believe the model I was looking at was the DC-390UW.

The Adaptec cards are very good but also very expensive. The 2940 is available in normal, wide and ultra wide. It's probably over the top for running just a CD-ROM or CD-RW from, they do make cheaper models which would be more than adequate. Iwill use a variety of SCSI chipsets including those made by Advansys and Symbios. The Tekram also uses a Symbios chip. Compaq use the Sybios chips in their Servers and they work very well but that's using Compaq's own drivers, I can't speak for Iwill's or Tekram's as I haven't used them.

I have used 3 Tekram DC-390U2W cards in some servers I put together at work. They work just fine and they are much cheaper than the comparable LVD Adaptec offering. I would highly recommend one, especially for home use.
