  • Overclocking a pentium 3 500

    Hey there

I have now overclocked my computer to 560, and it runs stabil.
The only cooling i have is the standard heatsink+fan, can i overclock it more?

    thx

with stock coolin', you're gonna be limited, but with some more muscular coolin', you can do much better, I use the MC-1000
    good luck!

I have my P3-500 running at 667 with bus speed of 133, just like Durango. If I can get my hands on the AGP4X version of the G400Max, I'll try pushing the system higher again. Good luck!

      Ben

Intel uses the same cooling on the CPU up to 700MHZ. Above 700 they start to improve them, so that is a pretty good rule to keep in mind; if you're not pushing a PIII above 700, and everything is running fine at stock voltage, you do not NEED more cooling. Of cource it never hurts (when applied properly).

I have my P3 500 at 600 no probs, I just take the side of the case off, according to the ASUS Probe (which seems to work for me) the CPU temp. is only 50-55C so that's cool, basically that's what I get at 500Mhz when the side of the case is on, I have one extra fan but it's pointing at my G400Max, I have it at %115, let me know if you get yours any higher, I kinda wanna go higher but don't wanna hurt my machine.

Barild, this is important. Do you have a Katmai or a Coppermine PIII? I'm willing to bet all the people who are running on a 133 MHz FSB and above have Coppermines.

The Katmai core is an older technology. The die is larger, generates more heat, and was designed to get to about 600 MHz. (Which doesn't mean you'll get to 600 MHz.) The Coppermine core, transversely, is smaller, generates less heat, and was designed to clock much higher without extreme cooling.

As usual, with overclocking questions, the answer is "it depends..."
