  • Copying "boot partition"??

Ok... so I just bought this 30 gig HD, and now I want to get rid of my old 5 ½ inch, 2 gig quantum bigfoot, to make room for a CD writer/burner (or whatever).

Problem is I don´t wanna reinstall windows, so my question is this:

Can I just copy my boot partition to another drive and boot up from that ??

Kind o´ urgent, so swift reply would be greatly appriciated.

Yeah i'm pretty sure you can.

Firstly you'll have to format the new drive and make it active while the other drive is not connected (fdisk will only allow one drive to be active). Then it should just be a case of copying the files accros using dos or windows. You may have trouble copying with windows as some of the files yyou are copying will be in use. Previously i have got round this by half installing windows to the second partition of the new drive and then copying it from there (making sure that you delete any files deposited by your half installation, a windows format will do that for ya)

When you restart the computer you should then be able to delete your half installed copy and go from there.

Or you could but Ghost. :-)

What I did when I installed my second HD was the following.

        1) FDisk the new HD with at least the same number of partions as the old HD.

        2) Install new HD as secondary HD

        3) Boot Windows. Make sure explorer is set to show all files, including hidden and system.

        4) Select all directorys and files on your primary partition. Select Copy and paste them into your new HD's first partition. Repeat for any remaining drives.

        5) Shut down and swap cables between HD's or remove old HD if you're not using anymore.

        6) You may have to run FDisk to make the first partition on the new HD active.

        7) Reboot and windows should load fine.

The advantage of this is that since you've made no changes to the old HD, if anything goes wrong just stick it back onto the primary controller and you've got windows back. Worked nicely for me.

Why don't you just use a backup application? You'll then also have all of your data backed up in case of a disaster.
