  • Samsung 950P or 955DF?

I'm trying to decide between these two monitors. Unfortunately, no local computer store displays them, so I can't go compare in person. Online reviews are also very scarce, for the 955DF because it's brand new, and the 950P who knows why. I seem to find a lot of online vendors selling both, however, great prices. Anyhow, I'll come to my point.

The 950P looks great, has a 0.26mm dot pitch and a 205 MHz bandwith, and thus will do:

    1280 x 1024 @ 85Hz (89Hz max)
    1600 x 1200 @ 75Hz (76Hz max)

As an added bonus, it also has 5 BNC connectors, which I hear can give a better picture? Not sure if this is the case or not, having searched all over the web, I have found hardly any information on using BNC.

The 955DF looks even better at the outset, as it has a completely flat screen and a 0.20mm (!!!) dot pitch, although this is specified as 'horizontal dot pitch' whereas the 950P is not specified. However, the 955DF only has a bandwidth of 135 MHz, and thus will do:

    1280 x 1024 @ 80Hz (max)
    1600 x 1200 @ 65Hz (max)

It also loses the 5 BNC connectors, though it does happen to be about the same price as the 950P (less if I buy before the end of this month thanks to a rebate from Samsung).

I don't know how significant the refresh rates are to me, as I have used a 15" which is refreshing at 60Hz for over five years and don't have any problems with flicker or eye strain or anything else. However, the thought of a truly flat screen and smaller dot pitch would seem to be important in terms of image quality. But then again so do the BNC inputs!

Sorry to ramble on. I realize few people will have experience with even one of these monitors, so what I'm really looking for is the relative importance of refresh rates, dot pitch, BNC connectors, and screen curvature.

    Thanks in advance!

    Aaron

I've never seen either monitor, but if these are your only choices then the obivious choice is the 950P.
60Hz on a 15" monitor might not bother you (one 15" I have is fine @60) but when going to a larger crt monitor you'll get sick real fast! That is if you could even stand to look at it @ 60hz. My 21" if driven below 75Hz will cause you to become very nausous fast. Go with the higher bandwidth and thank me later

I agree with Greebe. 0.26mm is an excellent dot pitch. I'm sure you won't be dissatisfied. BNC is the way to go but you'll pay a bit more for the cable. I wouldn't settle for any lower refresh rates than what the 950P is providing. How much is that monitor? I imagine its quite inexpensive.

Yes, the 950P is rather inexpensive. Including shipping, it's $350. Think I'll go with it instead of the 955DF then, as I have heard quite a lot of praise for the 950P and nothing yet on the other..

Seems you can get some 19" for under $300 these days, but next to my brother's $550 Sony (19"), the Samsung appears to be a great bargain.

Besides being rated #1 by PC MAg 19" roundup (950P), I own the 950P and Viewsonic PF790 (flat screen, high end graphics, $550)...and I have to say..if I did not buy the Viewsonic first, I would have definitely bought 2 950P's.

Outstanding picture and text...regardless of price...get the 950p....

Btw, I run the 950P at 60hz refressh rate...it DOES NOT FLICKER and the lower rates gives you a cleaner crisper text...controversial I know, but some folks run monitors at higher rates +75 to reduce "flicker"...but I see no flicker...and the price you pay for high refresh is more fuzziness...regardles of monitor. High refresh is not a free ride to perfect text and no flicker, so you should be aware of the trade off...check it out your self and lower the refresh rate of your monitor and view a document...smlller font the better...and now run it at the higher refresh rate...now tell me that the higher refresf rate doesn't look fuzzier than the lower refresh rate....also on intense graphic images (acid dye t-shirt colors) I have found taht higher rates tend to make the image "pulse"....good luck

If you are wondering about the ".20 Horizontal dot pitch" on the 955DF, it is complete hog wash. It is probably closer to .25-26 dot pitch using traditional measurement methods. The DF series of the monitors is lower than the P series AFAIK...
            Go for the 950P IMHO.
