Which gfx card for k6-2-550? or wait a few weeks?

    Which gfx card for k6-2-550? or wait a few weeks?

    Hi
    I've put together a modest WP/gaming system for a friend on a budget- all we have left to get is the graphics card.
    The spec is k6-2-550, 128Mb PC100, asus p5a-b, 30Gig Seagate Barracuda, CL DVD, 17" Compaq V75, 56k modem, PCI 128 + FPS1000 speakers.
    The remaining budget is £100 - £160. What would you (unbiased!) guys reccommend getting? We have an old Permedia GlyderMax2 AGP card in there now, so would it be worth waiting (2 weeks max as he is leaving then) for eg the G450, or the Geforce2 MX if they would be available by then?

    Wait until the last minute to make your decision. Go for a GForce if gaming is a high priority, otherwise go for the best Matrox within your budget.

      Hate to say this, but a GeForce would be more of a help for that poor K6-2. The K6-2 gets low framerates in Quake3 and other newer games due to processor limitations, but the TnL unit really breathes some life into those old systems. Of course, the list of supported games is pretty short right now, but its due to grow.

      No, Im not an Nvidia fan...I own a G400 Ive just got some common sense, and we all know the G400 is a cpu-hungry beast.

        I would like to point out that you can get and AMD Duron 600 for just a few bucks more than a K6-2 550. Along with it, there are a number of Micro ATX socket A motherboards available for right around 100$US. You would be FAR better off spending a little bit more on this and getting a cheaper video card right now.
        There are several very good reasons for doing this.
        1. A K6-x based system cannot be upgraded(not really anyway).
        2. A Duron based system can be upgraded to a Thunderbird at a later date.
        3. A Duron/TBird based system will support lots of additional features.(AGP4x, UDMA66/100, PC133 SDRAM)

        If you pick up a cheap video card right now and upgrade it later, you will have a much better system. The K6-X is dead. It's not worth getting one.

          Ooops, just noticed that you said that you've already put the system together. To late for my suggestion then.
          On that note, what the others have said is correct. A GeForce would probably be your best bet. A Voodoo 3 might not be too bad either. As for the G450, as you may have noticed by now on the front page the ship date is being reported as October, so thats not really an option.

          I would say just keep in mind my initial comments next time you have to do something like this. Sacrifice Hard Drive space if you have to, that can always be upgraded as well. A K6-2 however can't be.

            Thanks for the advice. We went with the k6-2 as part of the system was built on bits I already had.
            Have the Geforce cards got over their initial problems, and which is best in our price range?

              Yeah, better leave with a Geforce MX. At least it will give him a good feeling when watching 3DMark 2000 and Quake3 Benches. AAnd it's a good card with "3Deep" included, if you choose an asus card.
