    Need more power...

    I added another drive to my system the other day. When powering up the system the PSU shut down within 10 seconds. Then I hooked up an additional PSU and attached the drive to this one instedt and all worked fine...

    I guess 300 watts isn't enough anymore. This is the very first time I have come across a desktop system which required more power than a 300 watt quality PSU can deliver.

    What 400/500 watt PSU should one get? It really must kick ass in the 12 volt department.

    I just bought a PC Power & Cooling Silencer 400 ATX ps. No problems and great specs (specially noise level, 38 db)

    PCP&C will also provide you with custom PSs with high amp 12 V outputs if you ask.

    In my opinion, PCP&C makes the best PSs.

    They also have a Turbo cool 425 ATX with a dual speed fan.

      PCP&C - 425ATX TurboCool works fantastic. Most people who've commented on them like them. There was one who had the first problem child I'd heard of, other than that, no one I know of has had any trouble with one of there power supplies. Still have a 5 year old TurboCool 350AT Tower - still works - nothing to put it in unfortunately

          I think thats all. I have a powermeter hooked on between the AC-outlet and my box. It reads 340 watt during disk spin-up which drops to 260 watt afterwards.

            I have both a silencer 275 and a 400 atx. It's amazing how much quieter 10db can be...

            I highly recommend the 400 in your case.

              It does look like they know what they are doing. I have written to them for an offer on a custom PSU.

              I'm looking forward to hear what it will cost.

                Have you considered putting some SCSI devices into an external box?

                  Gee, 8 Hard Drives? What do you do with all that storage? Anyway, I have a PC Power & Cooling Turbo-Cool 350W ATX. I've heard good things about the Turbo-Cool 425W. It's not exactly the quietest PS though.

                    Please dont take this wrong but y not scrap some of those little old drives and spend your ps money on a 40 gig drive instead ?? Maby keep the 2 -9gig drives and retire the rest..Just a thaught...Matt

                      Consider using delay start up with some of the SCSI drives so the initial draw is not so high. Requires some jumper work on drive which works with SCSI ID to add amount of delay in seconds.

                        Thats also a good suggestion SCompRacer, I forgot about that feature ... never personally needed it though.

                          As you noted, 10 dB is a lot. Remember it's a logarithmic scale. Here's a nice demo that starts with a 250 Hz reference tone, then drops it 3, 6, 10, and 20 dB. Worth checking out if like me, you hate noise:

                            Oh my godness!! What a stuffed tower you must have, I understand that the 300W supply isn't enough anymore!
                            Another thing about silence, it's usually the fans that make the worst noice when you install a new fan by one that is kingsize (like 100x100mm or 120x120) and run them at undervoltage. with 8-10V for a 12V fan it makes almost no sound at all, just a breeze
                            It might not be so easy get a kingsize to fit but if you for example mount the fan at the side of the computer you might just as well make a bigger hole while you're at it...

                              Ghydda,

                              The problem lies probably in the age of your drives.
                              I have 10 HD:s (total ~120GB), a HP CD-RW, a Pioneer CD, Promise FT33, SB32AWE, RTL8029, Matrox G400Flex, RT2000, Millenium II, floppy and 4 additional PSU fans cooling the cards and HD:s, all powered by Fortron/Source FSP300-60GT, and there hasn't been any problems yet.
