Partition Question

I need some help before its too late and my HD fills up.... here is my question:

I have a 6.4 gig HD with three 2.1 gig fat16 partitions. My drive "E:" has nothing but mp3's on it, unfortunately, there is very little space on it (about 50 megs). My problem is i dont want to resort to putting mp3's on two different partitions.

is there any program out there that can read/write NTFS??????? that way i can convert drive d: and drive e: to ntfs, and take some of the space from drive d: and make a larger drive e:.... i.e. 3gigs.... and 1 gig for d:...

btw, i dont wanna use fat32 becos its slow and i hate windows 98..... (and i dont have win95 osr2)

If you want to be able to write you're gonna have to pay for it I think.

ya know what, i just went there... it would be nice to find a program thats free... but oh well.....i will hafta think of another solution...

ahhh... what about read/write ext2 or hpfs from windows.... is there a program that does that?

well i converted it to HPFS and i cant convert back.....

but i found two programs, both with problems. IHPFS was read only, but worked in win95. HPFS-Access was read AND write, but didn't work in windows, i had an error "Please turn off your DPMI server" how do i turn off my dpmi server ??? that may help me

looks like u r out of luck here .. most NTFS, HPFS and ext2 drivers i found r either for dos or they r read only.
And the r/w ones rn't free.

I assume u converted to HPFS using partition magic ? and i assume ur using win95 ..
so unless u get win95 OSR-2 .. u have to make more partitions.
I hate win98 too .. OSR-2 is better ..
But having more partitions in FAT-16 would be more benefecial for u .. at 2.1 G fat-16 ur having the maximum cluster size .. that is 32k; and thus waisting alot of space( maybee 200 Megs per drive !!).
u better make 1 gigs partitions ( 16k clusters) less waisted space.

Maybe you are loading EMM386 in CONFIG.SYS and HPFS-Access doesn't like it.

sisyfos: im not running anything in config.sys or autoexec.bat and i STILL get that error.... what could be wrong now...... now im in a state of emergency.... AGHHH!!!

Windows (9x) always loads EMM386 and uses DPMI, the only difference if you load it with config.sys is that you can choose the parameters. I don't think you can turn DPMI off while running in windows.

Not EMM386 but VMM32.
Maybe the program doesn't know better than to call it DPMI and in fact it's just refering to the memory management interface as such.
Well, I'm out of ideas. This HPFS converting business to regain disk space is a tad too 'long-haired' for my taste, but good luck Nehal

Winternals makes an "NTFS for Win9x" filesystem.

You have to get a few system files off a WinNT4 installation for it to work, but once it's installed you can read from and write to NTFS drives from Win9x.

They also make a "FAT32 for WinNT4" driver that allows NT4 to use your FAT32 drives. Their address is;

FAT32 for NT4 costs $39 USD while NTFS for Win9x costs $49 USD.

nehalmistry : the links that Sisyfos and Dr Mordrid r probably the same program .. i didn't try it .. but it looks like it'll do wat u want.
About the DPMI; it's not EMM .. there are 3 specifactions for accessing memory over 640k in DOS, eXtended XMS, Expanded EMM, and DPMI which was the last one to evolve and can access more memory just like windows do in virtual mode .. so DPMI has nothing to do with EMM386 being loaded or not ..
what's always there is himem.sys which manage XMS, EMM386 isn't loaded unless u want to ( either through config.sys or the pif file for a dos prog.)
and same goes for DPMI which u can configure a program to use it in windows through pif but not config.sys .. in DOS it's managed by the dos4gw.exe which comes with many DOS games like MK3.

i tried hpfs, failed, tried ntfs, failed..... so finally... i tried.... ext2...

i found a program that would mount it like a normal local hard drive.... support for read-only and long filenames....

then i found a program that could write to it.... but wouldnt mount it.... so i can download to my c or d drive and then use it to copy the files to the ext2 drive....

i know what your thinking "this is one crazy mofo". but this is actually what i wanted... (although i would have preffered the first program to support write/read instead of just read)
