    Brian,
Do you have a green 10/BaseT light on your modem?
Do you have a green link light on WAN side of your router?
Do you have a green link light on the LAN side of your router?
Do you have a green link light on your NIC?
Did you go to the DHCP tab on the Router setup and enable DHCP?
These are the first things to look at.

PS. I think you will have to uninstall your PPPoE software.

The router is connecting with the modem, it is the software (WinPOet) which is not connecting with the modem through the router. I get good router lights when I switch the modem on.

WinPoET takes the TCP/IP packet windows networking produces and wraps them in a PPP (dialup) wrapper.
The LAN side of the router can not recognise these wrapped TCP/IP packets as network packets any more than another NIC on the LAN could.
With WinPoET disabled your computer will talk the router just like any other network device. Then the router wraps the out going TCP/IP packets up in PPP shells and unwraps the incoming ones. Your computer will not be involved in the messy PPPoE business at all.

Great!!! Everything works now. Thanks everyone. Once I got up the nerve to delete WinPOet, life is good!!!!!

Chuck - Thanks for the link. I was having trouble with Outlook Express. It was set on using a dial-up connection. I still had trouble when I set it up to use the lan. The key (I think) was rebooting the computer afterward.

Just discovered my NIC has become sensitive to overclocking. Strange - I can live with it.

Your NIC may be connecting at 100mbps or full-duplex or both for the first time.
Can't think of any other reason for the overclocking problem.
What PCI bus speed are you running?

It won't connect at 120 or 115 MHz (/3). It's happy (relatively) at 100 MHz and maybe a little higher.

It is running at 100 Mbps, whereas previously it was connecting to the modem at 10 Mbps.

Thanks for the hint. I toned it down to 10 Mbps full duplex and I'm back at 120 MHz fsb with no problems.

                      I'll have to remember that...

When I add additional computers (running Win98) to my router:

Is there any other protocols to install other than Client for MS Networks and TCP/IP?

                        Enable DNS? Netbios? Wins Resolution?

Bind TCP/IP to Client for MS Networks?

Log on to Win NT domain? What Domain?

Anything else I can't think of?

Thats about all I can think of.
I think if you install TCP/IP and Clent for MS Networks you will be done.
All the correct settings are defaults.
UNLESS you want to map drives or share printers. To do that you need to set up static IP addresses for your computers.
That's the way our computers are set up at home.

Chuck - I would definitely like to share my printer. Also, drive mapping would be useful, but I would settle for printer sharing. How do you set up printer sharing? My only printer is a parallel port printer. So I guess I need to see my parallel port from the other computers?

Another question: Can one of the computers on the network have an analog modem installed in addition to the NIC card? I would like to have one analog connection for dialing out to work.

Setup is easy, but you do have to give your PCs permanent IP Addresses.
Also, be carfull what you share.
My wife & I just share 1 DIR on each drive to pass files back & forth. I dont think you should share c:\ for instance.
The printer thing is rediculusly easy. Set them to be shared, then do a...
"Start -> Printers -> Add Printer -> Network Printer ..." from the PC you want to get to the printer from.
As for the modem. You can use it but a MUCH better solution is to get them to set you up with a VPN account at work.
I am a database programmer and for me the difference in performance is amazing. Some of the tools I use pass a lot of info back and forth across the network. With the modem some things were painfuly slow and others impossible. Over the dsl connection its almost like being there.

Thanks Chuck. I don't know if my job has such a thing. We are very backwards technologically. (Still use old Oracle on a VAX).

By the way, how do you select IP addresses for the computers and where do you enter them?
