Just to put in my 2 cents; I have a HP8100i CDRW and it works fine (once I turned DMA off). I have more problems with my Acer DVD drive than I have with the HP drive.
Just wanted to say that, since the idea of introducing a SCSI chain into an IDE system gives me the willies .
I do agree about HP Tech Support, though, and freely admit that in my experience their hardware is not necessarily reliable, though very sturdy ("it may not work, but it won't break"). If you don't mind going SCSI, it's probably the best idea.
