Infrared doesn't @#!!$# work...

I just got a new p/pc. When trying to beam files to/from my laptop, the laptop will detect it, but then immediately drops the connection. This is repeated till the devices are pried apart.
I've tried different distances/angles, but nothing seems to work.Any ideas..
