  • Making an Alpha PEP66 fit in a ABIT BX133 mobo

One thing I soon noticed after switching to a FCPGA type P3 was the small size of the heatsinks available for these processors. They are half the size of the slot type heatsinks and just don't work as effciently.
I installed an Alpha PAL35t a couple weeks ago which works much better than the Thermaltake GORB did in my system. It just didn't get the temp down as much as I wanted.

Anyway, the Alpha PEP66 caught my attention since it is twice the size of the PAL35t heatsink. The only problem is it's made to use with slotkets only. Then, I came across a thread at HardForums where a guy that goes by "shrink" made a PEP66 fit in his BX133 mobo.
    http://forum.hardocp.com/showthread.php?threadid=48839
    Thanks shrink!!

I followed his directions and it was easy
So here's how to do it with pictures.

Here's the PEP66 on the left and the PAL35t on the right. Notice the size difference...

The key to making the PEP66 fit is to remove the ugly green BX chip heatsink and replace it with a thinner heatsink.

This is a good thing since ABIT doesn't use any type of paste or thermal pad under the BX heatsink. It's just sitting on the bare chip!!!! This also shows where I attached the Thermal probe on my processor with Kapton tape.

Here's the new thinner heatsink. I put this one on with Arctic Silver paste and a drop of super glue in each corner to hold it down.

This shows the PEP66 fastened to the processor. Note that I have the fan shroud attached opposite of Alpha's instructions so it faces the DIMM slots.

Does it work better??? Around 2-3 degrees cooler than with the PAL35t using a Delta 60mm fan on both

It's easy, all you need is a thinner heatsink for the BX chip and there is room to spare in the ABIT BX133.

It's already too late for most of us Otherwise we wouldn't be spending so much time on these forums.
Besides it keeps me off the streets and I'm having fun

But how fast is your internet connection?

Sorry, that was probably a "low blow", but I just couldn't resist.

                Beezer would rub THAT in.........LOL

I can only connect at 26400 thanks to all the shortcuts that US West took in my neighborhood. I found out that they pairlined all the homes in this area. That is they split a single phone line in to two, each with half the bandwidth for each home to make it easier to install a second phone line to those who want it.

AND!!! I can't even get DSL because of all this crap. Our phone lines won't support DSL because of what they did to the neighborhood.

I feel your pain, Paul. I'm in the same boat as you -- 56K that functions like 28K.

Rummor has it that cable may be available in my neighborhood by Christmas, and a new switching station ready by October (for DSL).

I'll believe it when I see it....
