  • sorry, but i need help

I would think the AMD rig would edge out the PII rig, Mainly because the AMD rig is 200 MHz faster. A K6-2 will outperform a PII 300 anyday. Unless you have been having troubles with your motherboard, which is currently AMD's only downfall.

For all around gaming, the K6-2 should still be slightly faster. Whatever computer has the most memory should get Win2k on it, as it is very memory intensive. Either system will play DVD's fine. If you put the DVD player on the PII I would suggest not doing anything else while watching a DVD, though.

    Cheers Jammrock!

Its a shame because the GA-5AX mobo doesn't like Win2K. I have tried the latest bios patch...

Has anyone heard of any problems with the board or know of any work-arounds?

Well, the first thing you need to get the Gigabyte board working is the ALI agp drivers. www.ali.com.tw or www.acerlabs.com

As to which CPU is faster, I'm not sure I agree with you Jammrock. My only experience with the K6 line is my old K6-2 350 that I oc'd to 400.
By in large, it performed on par with my PII333 at work, with the exception of SETI. The K6-X has a notoriously poor FPU, and I question whether or not even a 200mhz increase can make up the difference. However, if the 500 is one of the newer die shrunk K6-2+, then it probably does perform significantly better than the PII.
Just to throw another loop in there though, if you can get a PII350, or any other PII with a 100mhz FSB(the PII300 uses a 66mhz FSB), then it may take the lead again.

The only real way to find out which is better it to experiment.

Despite the fact that it appears that I just spent 2 paragraphs rambling aimlessly, I hope that you can get something out of it.

          Cheers Ian.

The K62 is new - it was the one the last batches to arive at the suplier that I use. However the PII is verrrrrry old with the old klamath (sp?) core.

I will try the Ali drivers though!

if you can get a PII350, or any other PII with a 100mhz FSB
The LX mobo only supports 66mhz.

In the LX board you could always get hold of a celery 533 or 566 or something and put it in. That's what I've done with a load of old bits I had laying around (I have a Packard bell motherboard in a Tiny Computers Case with an IBM monitor! ) The board should have only gone up to 333, but a quick bios update let me run a 533 in it!

                My P2-350 easily outperforms a K6-2 450 in 3D games so I'd expect a P2-333 so be roughly equivalent to the 500.

Also, what will the 'loser' receive?

Steve, that's exactly what I suggested!

                    sorry, but i need help

                    Sorry to do this folks!
As some of you may know, I have been playing with a couple of machines.
                    • Rig A
                    • Gigabyte GA-5AX (Ali Aladdin V AGPset)
                    • AMD K6-2 500

                      Rig B
                    • QDI Ledgend V LX mobo
                    • PII 300

Now I know that they are not very beefy - but it's all that I have at tho moment.

On machine will have Win2K and Win98 on, whereas the other will have only Win98.

What I want to know is:
                    • Which machine should perform better under a Win2K environment.
                    • Which should be better for games
                    • Which should be better for DVD playback

Although the LX mobo is old and doesn't fully support APM, it seems very stable.

                    The winner will receive:
                    192mb RAM
A SCSI adaptor and 9Gb IBM disk
                    A 23Gb IDE disk
                    DVD-drive
                    My G400
                    SB AWE 32
                    and a floppy drive....

                    ---------
I have tried them both and i have not noticed any speed difference going from 300 to 500.

                    Which would you go for?

                      She is not having two!

I cringe when i think about what I could buy for my PC with that....

So what do i keep then the AMD (which doesnt like Win2K) or the P2.

                      The looser gets scraps.
