Infrared

sup, i have a question about infrared..

my motherboard has support for infrared, unfortunately, i think that i might need a IR module/IR connector..... many websites say i gotta make it, but i would prefer it if i could buy it.... for $10 CDN or less....

my ultimate goal is to control winamp with a remote control.

any suggestions? should i buy it or make it?

The infrared module is not for remote controls that give you the option to switch music in WinAmp, but it's for infrared keyboards and mice.

If you do use an infrared module for your keyboard, the bad thing about it is that there can't be anything in the line of sight between the keyboard/mouse's infrared port and the infrared module, for otherwise the k/m won't react. In direct sunlight the stuff won't work.

That probably works through your soundcard or videocard. For TV-in videocards, you can use your remote control to change channels, so prolly there's a soundcard which controls this as well.

Infrared is also used to transfer files. I have been doing this with laptops and w2k, its fast and pretty damm cool.

You can also buy IR receivers that hook up to an external COM port.
