Kookstick - Get a DSL router if you change hardware. They do the same job as a switch, and in addition provide a DHCP server function (assign IP addresses) and also provide a hardware firewall. The better ones also allow you to open and close ports according to your needs (Zyxel). This gives you flexibility in your use of them as firewalls for games servers and other things. Again, I'm a little out of my depth with networking, but these routers are the tools meant for the job you have.
If you go with a switch, you will have to set up a firewall independently for both computers.
