Here's a link for an explanation of the differences between switches and hubs:
    http://nospin.com/2000_01/2000_16.html

Kookstick - Get a DSL router if you change hardware. They do the same job as a switch, and in addition provide a DHCP server function (assign IP addresses) and also provide a hardware firewall. The better ones also allow you to open and close ports according to your needs (Zyxel). This gives you flexibility in your use of them as firewalls for games servers and other things. Again, I'm a little out of my depth with networking, but these routers are the tools meant for the job you have.

If you go with a switch, you will have to set up a firewall independently for both computers.

Brian, if he sets it up correct it won't need an extra firewall. NAT software will render his network beyond the main system connected to the net, invisible. A dual nic setup is best, one for the net connection and the other for his own network will eliminate that problem. The added benifit is when correctly setup he won't need to pay for that additional IP addy/ month.

Altho I'm on @Home cable this applies to xDSL service too. I will add that this isn't the easiest thing to setup tho.

Kool, if you want to try it my way I'll lend the time to get you there

Greebe - Ease in setup is my main concern. That is why I recommended the above HW. I'll bet there are 4 or 5 ways of accomplishing this lan-internet connection. The DSL router is so easy I wouldn't do it any other way personally. Of course, only one IP address is needed from the ISP in the case of the DSL router also.

I get the impression that a hub is not the way to go in any event.

If you don't feel like wading through explanations, the simple answer is that a hub relays ALL packets to ALL ports regardless of source or destination. It's really JUST a repeater.

A switch only sends packets to the ports that need them, thus reducing collisions and improving latency, yadda yadda.

Brain, I whole heartedly concur that would be the simpliest setup. But what has me in a twirl is all I have is an Intel ISA 10 mbps nic to my cable modem (@Home supplied) and a 10/100 PCI nic (generic) connected to my hub. 1 IP is all I have and all three of my machines can do upto 3.2mbps down and upto 1 mbps up (as of yesterday I found they hadn't capped me! WooHoo So something must be either configured wrong or defective. Might be time to call the ISP and get additional info too.

Kool, ask blackmouser what he can do to help. This is a bud of mine that truely knows his networking shit!

I was wondering what you meant by your reference to Blackmouser... Thought it was possibly a pet name for...well you know... Never mind.

Did you have any trouble with conflicts putting the 2 NICs in one computer? I was tempted to do the same when I initially built my DSL LAN. I was talked out of it by most everyone who posted to my original topics.

Anyway, how much did @Home charge you for the NIC and modem? I paid $100 for mine with filters and a couple of adapters.

Free installation and first 30 days free. Then they botched that up and I complained and got another month free (working on my third month free right now!

Dual nics work fine. Bit of a problem with using NetBUEI tho, so I disabled that and went pure TCP/IP. Take a peek here, I used option 2. All works fine and dandy.

Do you have a dedicated server? or does your main computer serve?

By the way, I lived near Stop 10 and Rt 31 for a few years.

It's currently running on my old main, a 300a@464. I'll be changing it over to my old Cyrix machine that acted as my gateway when I used a modem for everything. I have NAT32, BID and seti running on it 24/7 as it eats up very little memory and resources. If I want to play games on it all I do is shutdown seti, that's it.

Greenwood, OMG! How long ago was that?

I lived there from summer 1987 - summer 1991. I lived in some tan/white townhouses on Stop 10 just behind the White Castle (!!). They had garages and everything for cheap money. Great buy. Used to be a drive-in theater behind them. Now a strip mall (like the entire length of RT31).

Bought my first computer in Indy. A small shop on the East side of Rt31 called Computer something or nother.

                      Found it: Computertalk

Was back this March for my son's wedding in Chicago. Stopped in Indy for a day to tour the old stomping grounds.

Hey, I'll bet Indy looked like Yugoslavia with rioting and demonstrations when they announced they fired Bobby Knight...

Not too awfully bad here in Indy. Bloomington and of course Bobby Knight Unv campus was arift with pro BK supporters. Burning effigy's and posters hanging on buildings. The Deans wife was on the news asking for calm and to get on with life. The death threats towards her family were quite extreme, tho nothing ever really became of it other than thrashing their yard a few times and needing police escorts where ever they went for a couple weeks.

                            Now talk about off topic!

Greebe- sorry I wasn't around to see all this action here. I am interested in your way and I happen to have a 3com 10 mbps card I could use for the dsl and a 10/100 for the network.I need to check my pci slots though so i'll get back, will I need 2 in my second machine also? It is also connected to dsl and would like to speed it up too. If I do not have enough slots for the 2 nic setup then what a router or switch, either way it looks like I should take the hub back. Thanks and i'll let you know tomorrow.
