OK. I though that I had better start a new thread. For all those who dont know this is regarding this.

ICS has stopped working.

The client can make use of the dial-on-demand function but no data can get through.

I can ping the host, but not much else.

Any ideas (argh!)

First review your setup:

Section I: Host Computer Setup

1) Configure your internet connection for the host: Run the Internet Connection Wizard, check the "I want to setup my Internet connection manually" box. Click the Next button. Check the "I want to connect through a local area network (LAN)" box. Click the Next button. Leave the "Automatic discovery of proxy server (recommended)" box checked. Click the Next button. Follow the rest of the onscreen instructions to setup your mail and news accounts for the host. (Note: My cable provider uses Terayon TeraPro Cable modems which provide dynamic IPs via DHCP, so no special settings were required.)

2) Secure your host computer: From the Control Panel Go into Network and Dial-up Connections, select the NIC connected to the internet: Uncheck File and Printer sharing. Highlight the Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) and select Properties. Click the Advanced radio button. Select the WINS tab. Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP. Click OK.

3) Share your Internet Connection: Select your Internet NIC again. Select the Sharing tab. Check the Enable Internet Connection Sharing box. Click OK. No special settings are required for the LAN NIC beyond what is done automatically by Windows. FYI: The IP address of the LAN adapter will be 192.168.0.1 with a Subnet Mask of 255.255.255.0. NO OTHER SETTINGS ARE REQUIRED FOR THE LAN ADAPTER.

Section II: Client Computer Setup

1) Configure your internet connection for the host: Run the Internet Connection Wizard, check the "I want to setup my Internet connection manually" box. Click the Next button. Check the "I want to connect through a local area network (LAN)" box. Click the Next button. Leave the "Automatic discovery of proxy server (recommended)" box checked. Click the Next button. Follow the rest of the onscreen instructions to setup your mail and news accounts for the client.

2) The setup procedure for a Windows 98 or Windows 2000 client is identical.

However, it could be something else:

I have been wrestling with a peculiar problem when using some NICs under WinME with ACPI installed:

Symptoms: after waking the client, it is necessary to reboot the client in order to get it to work with the host. So it may not be the host, but the client having problems (I've seen it specifically with the Linksys LNE100TX PCI NIC V4.x cards under WinME). The Client can use Network Neighborhood (MY Network Places), and can release and renew its IP successfully, but won't for some reason work with ICS. It also pops up sometimes after playing some games in Single Player Mode. I have a query in the works with Linksys: hopefully they will be able to shed some light on my problem.

Let me know if this is similar to your problem.

You probably just need to find out what your ISV's DNS addresses are and put them in the IP properties on the client machine

I discovered last night in 'internet options,connections,sharing' is help for ics. have you looked at it?

try 'add remove prg/windows setup/internet ' and uninstall ics then re-install instead of turning it off/on

I dont hink that you can do that under 2K...

Paddy, I think know your solution, or at least your best option.

Format and reinstall. I had this same problem, and the only thing that fixed it was doing just that.

The *Only* thing I did differently was format the Win2K drive to NTFS...don't ask me why it worked afterward, it just did.

OK, Thanks to Steve I am kind of getting there.

The machines can talk to each other.
Internet on the host is fine.
The DHCP server is working.
Dial on demand is working.
If I try to ping www.murc.ws from the host it brings up the IP 216.15.144.42, but it gets no response (even waiting 10 seconds).

The client cant ping anything on the net.

Any ideas.

Try putting in the DNS values for your isp in the modem connection.

Those values are for the host machine which sees the internet fine. My IP is dynamic so i cant specify one.

How would altering this effect the client machine?

Apparently I was smoking something when I posted earlier. What I meant was for the ethernet connection. I had to do that at some time in the past to get the client to see the net.
